I spent about half the day with a Toyota Engineer who designed 2nd gen! How was your day? :)

Maybe @DCSBFTMFW can weigh in on the variances on the TRD 4.0 vs SR 4.0?

    You ever watc
You will never believe this, but sometimes life is stranger than fiction. You ever see the show on TV "Pit Masters". They guys who build those outrageous BBQ pit rigs and go to competitions and big events? Turns out he has always been a chief at heart and would create big meals for everyone on holidays and stuff. He saw that and decided that is something he always wanted to do :) So he had a $65,000 BBQ trailer designed and built. He and his wife were retired and that is now what they want do to pass to the time, travel, and have fun. They have a huge RV and they pull the BBQ pit trailer to events. They have the RV insured with Allstate and he decided he needed to get the BBQ trailer insured also. His Allstate agent is a friend and is located right down the street from us. Allstate does not insure things like that so she refereed him to me. Like I said, sometimes life is crazy like that. :)

I don't know if t was right hand drive. Yes, obviously some to test and some to let employees play with. And yes, the design team was not all based in Japan (before someone else asks) He was in California

Another fun fact, in the meeting where they were discussing the 'Off-Road' package the guy giving the presentation showed pictures of trucks and jeeps in different environments. S***** said some of the pictures had trucks on big rocks, some in mud, some on trails and some in the desert. The presenter asked the engineers which picture do we define as 'Off-Road'. Several people weighed in their opinions basically saying picture 1 or 2 or 3 or whatever would be considered 'off-road'. When they were done, the presenter said all of these are to be considered 'off-road' and need to be considered in the design.

Earlier in our conversion yesterday he mentioned that smaller, better designed motors can almost always be designed properly to put out as much power as larger American motor and perform similar in most situations. I pointed out steep/rough rock climbing. He literally kind of chuckled and said good point. If your goal is to climb up a mountain over boulders, Tacomas may not be the best performer, but for a stock truck, with 'off-road package' will do well better than most for most people.

He said he still has buddies in California that build only Toyotas, honestly, mostly for desert running. For what that is worth.

Basically saying, they put thought in to it.

Right... I was asking because @Fight4Function said his had a 2 speed... and his profile shows a 2014 TRD OR. If all TRD's have SR+SR5, then he must have another truck with 2 speed wipers...

    Or a fake TRD... :anonymous:

Two engines with identical outputs but Toyota spent a bunch of extra money running two engine lines for 10 years? NOPE

Maybe the original TRD 4.0 was built tighter to handle the proposed twin turbos (unlikely) but that would have ended instantly once the turbo idea was binned.

I think he did alright with the 1st gen tundy. I love mine.

Next time you get a chance to talk to him, ask him why Toyota still can't get leaf springs right.

If he joined though he should be a :spy: about his identity and then just drops tons of truth bombs! If everyone knows who he is he probably would never be able to keep up with the explosion of questions.

Yeah I actually was thinking to myself the same thing, I'm curious how (internally) they decided the 1st gen tundra was a failure yet ended up being a truck that so many people desire today? I still have my old Tundra and aside from the balljoint issues that plagued some of them (including mine) it has been a dang good truck and the V8 4.7L is an amazing motor! Best fuel mileage I have ever gotten out of a truck by far and the dang thing never stops, I've got 236k+ on mine as it sits. Sure wouldn't mind seeing that V8 come to the Tacoma and back to the 4runner.
