Fwiw, I can hear some diff whine at 48-51 mph only and it's very slight. Can't even hear it while it's raining much less while playing music. It doesn't bother me really but seems like some people have it much worse. I have solid diff bushings in my other car and it whines/clunks loudly all the time...that would not be acceptable on a new Tacoma in my opinion.

    I was going to say...
I thought all the ones that went back for testing were deemed "within spec".

Allegedly yes, this is what the FTS told me...but it's all hearsay, I haven't seen anything documented on it. Also he said this in passing, as casual conversation. Now I don't necessarily believe he is lying but there are a lot more questions I would have for him if he was indeed willing to put this on paper. Also within spec to what? In spec IAW the tech requirements Toyota subcontracted out to the supplier? Who knows what this statement really means. Believe me I don't have a problem putting my finger in somebody's chest and asking them some pretty pointed questions on this kind of thing. Just didn't feel this was the right time, place or person to do that with.

no right problem heres your expert 20 second evaluation on the howling(road noise, wind, coughing) which equals the great downfall of Toyota trucks also Toyota has dismissed this issue as being normal even after replacing the differential to keep the customers happy, having this HOWLING in reality its road noise, exhaust, engine, wind combined. if I nit pick every sqeak, road noise,engine/exhaust,wind/turbulence I pick up I would be in a pool of tears everyday on TW. but I know Smitty you are the pied piper/hero of the 3rd GEN malcontents looking for a reason to kick big bad Toyota corp. over the high cost of the Tacoma truck over baseless claims of bad quality, when in reality Toyota has addressed these complaints and acted on them.

You're out of your element Donnie. You're like a child.....

I have far more respect for Smitty99 documenting issues in the 3rd gen forum than I do a 2nd gen guy passing his day by injecting his opinion about a truck that he doesn't own. I picture you sitting over your laptop and calling your frat brothers to come over to see how funny it is that you've gotten some people riled up.

    Pretty sad really.

oh yes he is a great hero and an expert on crying about non issues because in his own mind he was duped into buying an over priced truck with a plethura of quality issues based on his expert background and knowledge and needs to lash out against the corrupt Toyota corp. for not addressing them in his timely manner. get real or go get a mini van. this forum also is for Toyota truck enthusiasts and owners as the title states primarily, if you want to negatively and falsely demean Toyota trucks go somewhere else.

actually you add nothing to the whole site, Toyota Truck enthsiasts and owners who really want to help others enjoy their trucks, not negative people that have nothing good to add except how much of the shaft that got buying a Tacoma that would be you

I'd imagine, I'd be thankful to have an out of spec differential; which I guess I do.

I was told that Toyota has disassembled the returned diffs and found nothing wrong. They also said the fix is a noise abatement solution, not anything in the diff. This was from my Toyota case manager so take with a grain of salt.

    Off topic...
You guys have to get the MVCI cable and download Tech Stream.

Won't do squat for the diff whine though.

    Update:

Had the Tacoma assessed by someone who has set up A LOT of diffs, gears, etc... so much so he teaches others to do it. I was prepared to pay him handsomely to set it right. We went for a ride so he could hear what it was I wanted sorted:

He didn't think the singing/moaning at 40-55mph was a malfunction but might be a sloppy set-up. In fact he was able to point out that our truck has a lot of driveline noise. He was able to draw my attention to a hiss from the back end that is also driveline related - was able to show me the difference from the hiss from the tires. He was not prepared to tear into the diff because he was not optimistic that "blueprinting" it would definitely remedy the noise. He also suggested mic-ing the center bearing vs the diff just to be sure but he did favor the diff as the noisemaker. I asked about different fluids and he encouraged me to try "in case you can convince yourself it helps". *funny*

His opinion after a ride along. "Boy that's one of the louder drivelines I've heard in a new truck in a while - but it doesn't sound broken, just loud". He then said something disparaging about engineers I don't care to repeat.

There was a post about Toyota looking to ameliorate the transmitted sound with sound deadening of some sort - they may be right after all.
