I am curious about your engine trans combo. When traveling on the highway at say 65 mph, and you start and incline or need to pass someone , do you feel the deactivated cylinders kick in instantly ? Does the trans always know instantly what to do ? What happens if you hit the gas , back off the gas and hit it again all in a a second or 2 ? I would think the combo you now have has twice as many options as the Tacoma . Does it all seem smooth and flawless ?

You can feel a very slight change when it goes from 4-8 cylinders, but nothing jarring, jolting or harsh.

I can't even tell when the tranny is shifting unless I kick it down by stomping on the gas. It is nothing like my old Tacoma. If the Chevy is hunting for gears- I can't tell.

The only mechanical nuance I notice is in the front suspension. A pronounced bump when going over obstacles. The suspension is certainly more truck like than the Tacoma. The Tacoma has it beat on that merit, as it should.

    Yes I totally agree !

I don't post much because I'm new here. Fighting with each other only creates a "Divide and Conquer" factor. Stay on top of the issues with the factory. I'm certainly interested in a solution to this problem too, although I most likely don't have the patience to wait a year like some of you.

There are other alternatives though. Toyota may be giving US makers a chance to make a comeback. I purchased a 17 TRD sport blindly because my friends have been driving them for years. I was driving a 2010 F150 Crew Long bed 5.4 V8 6 speed trans until it was totaled in Sept. The 6 speed took some time to get used to. It did a lot of shifting But Hey - It's a six speed! But Also - the "7 Year old Ford technology" shifted very well at the correct points, and the 5.4 V8 got 17-18 city and 20-21.5 highway.

I'll be getting the TSB this week. I really like the truck. Mine gets better MPG than I was expecting (maybe I should do a manual calc LOL). It is very frustrating to drive this way. I will expect a free 100k warranty if the TSB doesn't fix it.

I may have stumbled on a permanent fix to the shift issues. Disconnect the battery. Thats it. No more shift issues. Just don't reconnect the battery. Free fix. You can thank me later.

Yup, i made a post about this. But it only lasts a month or so. Disconnecting the battery only clears the short term learning. To clear both short and long term learning you can take it to the dealer. Clearing everything in my experience lasts a little longer but the shifting issues still come back. In my opinion this is where all the positive reports post TSB come from. The learning was cleared by the TSB and truck drives great, then it comes back and people report its back to its old self and the TSB did not fix it. In my opinion the issues have something to do with the software, specifically in terms of the learning algorithm or however they do the learning. Everytime the battery gets disconnected or the learning completely cleared the truck drives amazing. As soon as some learning takes place it starts driving like crap again.

Maybe I read it wrong, but I think @mrproduxn was making joke, as don't reconnect the battery, i.e., you won't experience the issues if it can't be driven. It would be nice though if Toyota could keep the trucks in constant learning mode, so they would drive great. I'm not sure though if there is a downside, or a reason Toyota hasn't done it, or will do it.

Or you just live with it until Toyota either fixes it for your year or comes out with a new engine / tranny. I could have lived with mine, but when I added all the small things up the sum didn't make sense. So away she went...

I've only got 2900 miles on mine but I can say the only issues I've had so far are not liking the way the tranny shifts and I heard the lower control arm howl only once in heavy cross winds. The control arm howl is a super easy fix, the transmission is doing what it was programmed to do. Just because I don't like it doesn't mean its broken. Hopefully the TSB fixes it better than the original TSB. These issues would certainly not make me sell my truck. I know some guys have had lots of issues, I guess i'm one of the lucky ones I duno.

Pretty crappy mileage - my around town MPG was better than open highway, my towing experience not the greatest (here in the Rockies), rear diff starting to whine, my local Toyota dealer was not that great to deal with..

Plus I went into the Tacoma purchase thinking that my dedicated trail rig, a 1998 Jeep Cherokee XJ, was going with my son to college. I also sold my full size 3/4 ton diesel not needing it any longer. I kinda went into this with the mindset "The Tacoma will make do. Everyone in the family can drive it and I can get decent mileage, haul the hunting stuff, hit the trails with it, yadda-yadda". That was a mistake on my part.

Found out my mother in law is giving my son her 12 year old Outback with 35,000 miles on it- so my trail beater Jeep is staying. A full size truck just fit us a lot better. Don't need to try and 'do it all and make do' with a Tacoma. I can have my truck and trail beater again, just not a 3/4 ton.. The 1/2 works great.

Honestly the Tacoma is a nice off road capable light duty vehicle. Not knocking it at all. But it really falls pretty short as a truck, at least in my experience. Certainly more capable off-road, but it really ain't much of a 'truck'. And I say that having owned at least 10 different trucks in 30 years.

Meh, win some lose some. I bought my Jeep on a fire sale from someone who needed cash. OME suspension, front bumper and winch, rear bumper and tire carrier. I stole that one so Karma says my turn to eat some, lol.

I have about 1000 miles on since the rev 1 update and honestly I'm becoming more impressed as the miles pour on. At first, I was really disappointed. I still get the clunk occasionally from 2nd to 1st but the downshifting isn't nearly as harsh. Gas mileage initially looked awful but is now better than it ever has been. The truck does lose a bit of power when pulling uphill right after an upshift from 3rd to 4th but I'm seeing improvements. Look guys, I think we're all disappointed that this truck was far from ready to be released when it was... but the focus of this thread was to determine the pros and cons of the trans enhancements made by the TSBs. That's my update.

My regional rep says they're working on another update to fix the clunking. Also, if I wanted to spend close to $50k on a truck, I would've bought a Tundra lol.
