Perhaps, but 6th on the manual is quite a bit lower than the auto. I find that I have plenty of power to pull 6th once above 50. I run 5th in town once above 40. The low 1st is nice for real slow work though I guess.

 

Hell I roll around in 6th in town down to around 30 with no lugging. I actually wish the manuals had a deeper first and second gear. 5th gear is useless and usually skipped. 4.88:1 gears in the differential would have been nice too.

 

This touches on 2 threads, 1st I drive a diesel F350 for work with an automatic and it's the only way to go, my buddy has an older F250 manual diesel and it's is painfully cumbersome in all but the open road. Advantage Auto. I just sent my old fun truck down the road a 90' Z71 stepside auto. Off road it was semi capable, on road, smooth and fairly quick allowing me to harrass some ricers for fun. 2nd I replaced my fun truck with a 13' TRD OR, 6sp Man. I got it at 35k with the worn out Bfg long trails, the truck is quick and spunky after you past 1st&2nd gear. 3rd gear on its in the game. With those tires 5th gear was not used much. I just put on the heavy Bfg KO2's 265/75/16. My result it takes more effort to get down the road but every gear seems to be placed just right, even 5th. I loving every gear change and the option to pick my RPM. Flip side Auto Taco with the power draw and alll the downshifts, haten it. Manual Taco ,Yes Please.

 

hi y'all. got my Pro last night, the first MT in GST. i'm at about 60 miles so far. it is massively beyond my expectations, i'm kind of blown away, especially having inspected and test driven a few Tacomas in the past. this is entirely on a different level, fit & finish are Lexus level on my truck. got a few things in the mail so i'll save the pics, but i have one to share you may appreciate.

 

I find that I use 5th quite a bit when towing. Here in BC we have a lot of mountains.

Most of us are using some sort of 3/4" ID grommet. I got one from Home Depot, but I'm not loving it.

 

the boot stays put on its own. the grommet is cosmetic to cover the hole and the clip internals. since that pic i have wrapped the jam nut and shaft down to the grommet in a 1/2" strip of black suede leather, since my fingers hit the jam nut every time i grabbed it. it's totally awesome now, looks great, feels great!

 

^^^. You can wrap some Teflon tape around the threads and the knob will stay tight without the jam nut.

 

i'm using blue loctite.

I said that in my first or second post here. Its a deterrent for thefts and stupid friends that wanna mess with you lol

 

Any of you have a 2nd Gen. 6 speed and now a 3rd Gen. 6 speed?

If so, which one do you prefer?

Any issues with the 3rd Gen. manuals as with the early 2nd Gens?


Looking at buying a new 4 door. Have an 1st Gen. V6 5 speed and I love it. Fun truck to drive. Need to get a bigger truck though.

 

Had a 6speed FJ... same as 2nd gen transmission. The 3rd gen transmission is 10x better than that one was.

 

Had an 06 and put 180k Miles on it. I would say the biggest difference in the 3rd Gen is how much smoother it is, plus it seems like the 3rd Gen has a wider gear ratio. Mostly noticeable in 1st, 2nd and 3rd gear. All and all, so far I prefer the 3rd Gen.

 

I'm on my first Tacoma with the 3rd Gen that I just bought. 2017 DCSB 3.5 V6 4x4 Sport M/T. My buddy owns a second gen manual and he drove mine the other day. He said the 3rd gen is a significant improvement and is much smoother. He's looking to trade his second gen for a 3rd now.

I've only had my truck for 400 miles and less than 2 weeks, but I absolutely love it! While the engine is not the most powerful, it is a blast to drive with the stick shift. It's the only way to go in this truck IMO.
