Climbing from cab to camper shell? I have some questions and am seeking advice...

Me trying to get through, from the cab.

I have a 2016 Tacoma TRD Off Road with a ARE CX series camper shell. I was attempting to try and crawl through the back window and couldn't fit. Have Tacomas always had this issue? Not being able to fit through the back window to get into the truck bed?

What have you done to change the back window to use your camper shell?
To better explain... I have a tear drop camper I use for road trips. I would like to go on my next trip without it to make parking in cities easier. Also, I would like to be able to keep the whole truck locked on the outside and just crawl through my back window to sleep in the camper shell.

My truck has no lift its stock.

Im 5'8", 168lbs, my waist is 30. I couldn't get passed my shoulders. Has anyone had that issue with another generation Tacoma? Is there a relatively standard fix or change people make?

I see someone said pics would help. I'll take pics tomorrow and explain further. Thank you to all for the helpful stuff, funny stuff, and whatever.

You are using it backwards. They are designed to work the other way. It's a reverse polarity rear window. i bet if you tried it the other way and climb in from the bed into the cab that would work better.

Its the basic round peg in the square hole problem. Cut off any protruding appendages and you should fit through.

Remove the rear window, it's very easy. Put one of these in https://www.custompickup.com/shop/index.php?l=product_list&c=18

Here's a thread about replacing the rear slider - https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/sliding-glass-window-replacement.99728/

To remove the rear window I've done it by myself, but easier with one person in the cab, the other outside. Outside get your fingers under the weatherstrip at the top corner pulling out, inside at the same corner pulling the weatherstrip down and pushing out.

Slowly pull it out on the side and top, just work your fingers down the side and along the top. Use some soapy water if you like. Takes about ten minutes.

Then boot the gap. To reinstall use the cord method in the thread above.

EDIT: Whoops nevermind about that inflatable boot, it's only the size of the slider opening. I guess you'd have to get a shell with the full compression boot on it. Those have worked great for me over the years, it is a nice thing to be able to crawl from cab-to-cap.

EDIT AGAIN: custompickup.com has rubber compression boots you can add on. https://www.custompickup.com/shop/index.php?l=product_detail&p=3336

With my 1st gen I was about your size and could climb thru the back window, but not anymore, lol. Maybe a pop-n-lock would work for you so you could lock the tailgate with your remote. Just have a plan B on getting out if it stops working.

I used to do this all the time when I was a young boy-child. You gotta employ the deadlywiggly technique. One arm through, and worm your way through at an angle.

I'm 6'1" with a 33" waste, I fit through. You either fit or you don't. It's nice to have the truck locked up while I sleep in public areas.
