    The 2.7 has been around for a long time and has relatively old tech. Personally would like to see the 2.0 Turbo(atkinson cycle) that is now in some Lexus models. Maybe a new 4cyl will debut in the mid model refresh?

    It would definitely be interesting to see this. The only opposition I would see Toyota having with that idea is that using a turbo 4 cyl. would obviously increase the cost to the buyer, and possibly cannibalize their pricing structure. It seems that the guys who are going for the 4 bangers are doing so purely out of cost/value. Unless Toyota came out with a Turbo'd 6 cyl as well, I kind of doubt we see this happen.

    If it's as reliable and as bulimic as the 3.5, count me out.

    This is Toyota we're talking about here. They are reliable because their engines are less complex. No incentive to make a fancy base motor if they want you to pay a premium for the V6.

    If they were bringing out a new 4cyl, they would have done it for 16. 4 cyl turbo would be great in a mid sized truck. Looks like it's up to Ford to do it with the Ranger in a couple years.

    Is the word you're looking for anemic?

    Or does the 3.5 somehow eat a lot of gas and then puke it back up to lose weight?:rofl:

    Anyways yeah, I bought my 3rd gen with the 2.7 partially because I was looking for a bargain, but also because it's such a tried and true powerplant. The only change for the 3rd gen is the addition of Dual VVTI.

    Turboing the 2.7 might be pretty nice, but it's clearly going to come at a cost.

    @Nitori

    No I meant bulimic. Like after everytime you drive a 3.5 you force yourself to purge. Lol!

    I test drove a 13' 2.7L same spec as mine, and my 16' has much better power. I was actually pretty surprised. I think the new vvti makes a big difference.

    I'm pulling 33's no problem with stock gears.

    And that's a prerunner too! :headbang: That looks like one hell of a toy. Maybe a little short lived based on all that anti lag and flutter, but I dig it.

    But I meant it in the sense that a Turbo 2.7 couldn't be had at the same price point. You couldn't roll into a dealership and get a Turbo SR equipped like mine for a base price of 22.

    I don't have a single doubt that in a couple years I'm going to go buy a new 2.7!!! And keep my 06 :)

    I would love to see Toyota turbo these engines, especially the 3.5. Imagine a Taco putting out similar numbers to a 3.5L ecoboost (365 hp, 420 lb/ft)!

    Edit - Second gen ecoboost is going to put out 375 hp, 470 lb/ft.

    Wont they have to put the 2.0T motor to replace the 2.7L to keep up with CAFE regulations?

    They just renewed the 2.7l for the 3rd gen. They could easily put a turbo on this motor and get excellent results from it. The block is identical the the 3rz so its rated for well over 1000hp and so just a minor tweak of the camshaft profiles and durations, along with dual VVTi would make for a quite reliable, smooth, controlled platform.
