I'm a little late to the party but I'm another TDI owner. I discovered a bit of a loan issue yesterday with my car but will be settling that shortly. While I love this car to death, that buyback is quite alluring. Got my eyes on a 2nd gen Tacoma

Also I don't understand why anyone would be mad. The words "clean" and "diesel" should never be used in conjunction with each other. Lol. To me, 45-50mpg kind of trumps any argument that these cars are "polluting" or whatever. All cars "pollute" to some degree, but not all cars are as efficient as the TDI's. But I digress.

Hopefully will have some progress here shortly. Pretty excited to get into a Tacoma.

Yeah, I agree, I could give to craps about the pollutants, we bought the car for my wife because it gets 40 - 45 mpg hwy. If you could sell me a car that got 80 mpg and emissions were twice, signe me up... Well sign her up.... I drive a truck.

Honestly we'd probably be keeping the car if 1) the AC hadn't gone out this summer, which they want $1750 to fix, & needs new set of tires and inspection/registration; right there you're talking $2500.
    2) the "fix" is going to adversely affect the mpg no matter how you shake it... The whole reason we bought the car in the first place.
    3) maintenance is un-gody expensive. My God I know it's a German car, but come on, it's not a Porsche, it's a freaking Volkswagen, the thing only cost like $25K.
    4) your going to pay me more than half what the car originally cost, at 6 years old... I'll take that deal all day long, and twice on Sunday.

Oh BTW for what it's worth, after submitting our signed paperwork online, we had a scheduled buy back date within 8 business days. Buy back on the 17th!!!

As a 3rd Gen Leasee who is making money (see more than what I paid) off my TDI; I would have liked to have purchased a 2nd Gen 2015 instead. I couldn't pass up the deal at the time that Toyota was running for their SR5 in Double Cab for $239/mo and got my dealer to budge from that a little and ended up with a smoking deal. If I were buying long term; i would've went with the 4.0. Good luck!

It's a trade off in my opinion. Do you want fuel efficiency, or do you want a cleaner burning vehicle? (Note: cleaner, not clean). You can't have both. Unless you ride a bicycle then more power to you :p No vehicle that burns fuel will ever be 100% environmentally friendly. However, efficiency lowers environmental impact, which is important. What VW did was indeed a poor decision, but making the engine more efficient (and more reliable) in the process was the outcome. Just my $0.02. Hoping to sort out the loan stuff and submit my paperwork soon thereafter
    :fingerscrossed:

A 3rd gen would be nice. Trouble is I am having a hard time justifying $35k on a V6, mid-size pickup. And I'm leery of the known problems that have been occurring. Nevertheless, they look like awesome trucks. I think if I can swing a nice 2nd gen, I'd be plenty happy. Plan is to keep the truck for a while and some time next year take it on an extended trip through some western states :)

That's what I'm saying. Slight buyers remorse after the fact in this case. I should have done more research and purchased a late model 2nd gen with the 4.0. After this lease is up in 22 mo, I'll certainly be needing a full-size Crew cab(for baby seats) and Toyota simply can't deliver with a long(er) bed.

Unfortunately I'm at work and they're asking for the actual mileage.

My paperwork is under review. This is kind of bumming me out. I've only owned the car since July 2015, but I'm certainly having a hard time coming to terms with letting it go already. Great car...also keep getting told I'm going to miss the MPG's. Frankly I'm pretty discouraged by the reported mileage some get with their Tacoma's. But, I think the versatility and longevity of one of these trucks will more than make up for it...at least that's what I'm telling myself :p

Just wanted to share my progress.

    My buyback happened Friday.
no issues they just needed to take a picture of it running for proof and vin verification
BUT.... when I went to Chase to cash the check (I don't bank with Chase, but the account it was drawn off of was Chase) I was told VW set up the account so that it could not be directly cashed I had to deposit it into my own account and wait for it to clear, so once again VW takes a half win in spite of their customers.
    FINALLY OVER!!!!!

I just remembered something I wanted to ask. Do they determine their offer based on current mileage or mileage before the scandal? I've put over 35k miles on my car since then..the portal site said I average 1000 some odd miles per month which is incorrect. I average around 2000 per month. Is this something I can discuss later on or do they just assume your mileage and offer based on that?

Offer value in the letter you receive will be based on mileage originally submitted... When you go to your appointment, they will record actual mileage and proceed to chop off their mileage adjustment. The EFT or check they write you will reflect the revised value.

So mileage before all this doesn't mean squat? Wishful thinking on my part I suppose. I think I'll just about break even after all is said and done. Probably the only time in my life I'll ever NOT lose money on a car.

My buyback is scheduled for this Saturday. I'll be glad to get it out of the driveway where it has been sitting since I picked up the new taco at the end of October. I'm going to miss the car because it was fun to drive but there was no way I was not taking the deal. It's a 2010 jetta that I paid 24K for, drove it 5 years and put 177,500 miles on it, and they want to buy it back for 12K? Done deal.

My boss has the TDI and is currently shopping around for something else.

My curiosity has the best of me wondering what's going to happen to these TDI's. Crusher? Shipped overseas? It's ashamed really. He gets like 40mpg and only has 25 k miles on it.

All you guys who have appointments, how did you upload the offer back to their website? I could only upload one page, no matter what I tried, so I hit "continue" and now I'm locked out, can't go back. So now they only have the first page and it's gonna get rejected, hopefully soon and I can try it again. How does one post all seven pages to the site?

    Thanks

You have to put all the pages together as 1 PDF and upload it. Get the free PDF app for you phone called tiny scanner. Works awesome. Also remember that your pdf upload to VW can't be over 10MB so you may need resize that jawnt
