    Hey everyone.

I'm considering a fat bike purchase. I've been doing research on frames and was trying to find a handbuilt small shop in Oregon. No luck so far

Found a couple of companies in Michigan and Minnesota.

Any recommendations for good frame builders? Pricing seems to be through the ROOF right now due to the fad.

    Cheers,

    Chris

Any reason you aren't just considering a Specialized, Scott, Salsa etc? And were you talking about 616 as the custom brand in Michigan?

They're still in the running. Was just considering options. If I can snag one during a sale then I would consider it. One of my good buddies has access to parts at cost - he was going to help me build out if I can get a frame.

And the custom brand in Michigan is Rad.

Cool, just curious. I am the type to always be hesitant to go the custom way, knowing the main brands have a solid product with good support, but that is just me. Not saying it is the right way, but just less to worry about on my end. I'm curious to see what you end up with. Good luck in your search.

the fat boy geometry is going to feel the most familiar to your modern trail bike geometry.

Ya, that was my thinking. A brand like Specialized is going to have all the kinks worked out. There really is nothing to worry about, you know it will be legit. Plus, good warranty / support. And you can still build it how you want. I know it is probably annoying since it seems like everyone rides the same brand(s). I see Fat Boys most often when I see fat bikes out on the trail.

Not quite the same bike, but I ended up with a Specialized Stumpjumper when I was in the market for a 27.5 trail / all-mountain. Eventually I just narrowed it down to that, based on spending a lot of money and getting something that I know is going to perform. I am happy. But obviously there is other criteria for selecting what rig to buy, just giving my own experiences.

That has definitely crossed my mind. Ease of access to repairs/warranties is a big consideration.

I spend time in Bend and those big brands have a huge presence there. Customs obviously not.

    I'll take a look. Thanks!

    Absolutely.

I just started my search so that may change the minute I delve into the customs.

I could potentially pick up a great rig at REI during their sales plus the 20% member and the one time 20% coupon. Usually the bikes are excluded, though.

I started with a Gravity Deadeye and started modding from there.

    Pretty intriguing.

    Any photos of your rig?

Does it use standard components that can be swapped with off the shelf items?

Borealis and 9 Zero 7 are two of the really high end companies. If you want something custom fit then consider a Moots. They make titanium bikes out of Steamboat Springs, CO

It's the frame I'm looking for. It seems to be the most expensive element.
