Well its cotrolled by the holly jim home owners association. Passage is by permission. That can be revoked. There's sign there that kind of explains it. The hoa clears the road at their expense and the tend to get very pissed at ruts that get put in by wheelers. I think whatthepho had his permission revoked. Which means he could be slapped with criminal tresspassing if he was wheeling back there.

The actual trail is a public trail, it leads to a hiking trail that I always use. It would make no sense to make it legal to use the public trail, but prohibit the use of any roads to gain access to it. The problem arises when people go to offroad, like Paul said. People try to take the side bypasses, which are indeed fun, but thats not part of public road and they can give you a ticket for it.

I know Paull is just looking out (Thanks for warning the Holy Jim virgins) but I've been offroading, hiking and biking there since I was 15 and have never had a problem, yes it is a private road as it says at the beginning of the road but it leads to a public Cleveland National Forest trail also marked by a sign when you get to it about half way up, it is legally used by the public for fishing in the creek (ranger regularly stock with fish), mild offroading, mountain biking and hiking.
Yes the trial is lined with some private property in which most are clearly marked and gated.

The only fools that get rolled are guys that have no respect for the speed limit, private property signs or people who go in there to do/sell drugs and those that dump trash.

The road is actually part of the O'Neill Regional Park and The Cleveland National Forest and is controlled by the National Forest Service and the OC Sheriffs Dpt. It is not controlled by the residents within Holy Jim. The O'Neill portion goes to about the RC Model Airport and is controlled by the Orange County Sheriffs. Once you pass the RC Airport, you are in the Cleveland National Forest, which is controlled by the National Forestry Service. Anywhere and everywhere on this road, you are required to conform to National Forest Service regulations including remaining on marked roads and remaining under the posted speed limit. (not sure what NFS speed limit is if unposted). This means that all the side trails off of the main road are off-limits to 4-wheel vehicles.

Per the Forestry department, you are required to have a Day Use Pass anytime you are traveling in the Cleveland National Forest. There are signs posted referencing acquiring a Day Use Pass and/or Annual Pass from the Trabuco Canyon General Store..

The road is listed on the Cleveland National Forest Service map as 6S13

Here is the Link to NFS Passes

Actually, it can be a very enjoyable place for a brief day's outing. The real fun, if you have the cojones, is to purchase a proper Day-Pass and make the drive to the top of Saddleback Mountain. (Note: This drive is not for the faint of heart, especially post the recent rains.) Take food, water and a full tank of fuel as it will take a full day to make the trip over the top and down to the I-15. Use Indian truck trail road to get down the mountain on the North side.

The road to the top of Saddleback from Holy Jim Cyn is open only during certain months of the year do to fire hazards and an endangered frog's mating season. It was open during the Holidays, and I believe it remains open at this time. The Forestry Service will tell you for definite if you call them.

It can also be a killer place for a good mountain bike ride. My toughest ride ever was where we took Holy Jim to the truck trail and then came back down horse thief - all on a brand new bike with a ridiculously low charge in my rear shock and on a short time frame to get my frend to work at a time that allowed for no rest. Try the ride and get back with me!!!:D  :)
