I guess it depends what you are looking to do? Might be easier to get specialized books. For instance I got a basic electrical book from Lowes or home depot. Has helped me greatly.

I have a subscription to Fine Homebuilding and have had for years , my mom renews it every year for my Christmas present . It used to be a builder oriented magazine that discussed finer details and craftsmanship and more difficult or higher end applications of products and techniques . Now its a homeowner or handyman targetted magazine with lots of pictures of finished rooms / houses and dumbed down reviews of tools and explanations of entry level techniques and materials

I'm not looking for anything like that, I'm just looking for something to read once a month and pick up some ideas or learn how to do some stuff that I hadn't thought about.

I have framing and roofing and general home repair books, but I'm looking for some leisurely reading.

Does that sound like it might be what I'm looking for? Can you explain what kind of content to expect? Thanks.

Yea that basically sums up what I'm looking for, and what I've read about that magazine. I want something that will teach some good info, not basic shit that I already know how to do.

Took 5 hours but finally have a back door. All the pre cut notches for the latch plates were to small for he lock I got so I had to spend some time with the dremel.

Ive met a few of the ambassadors for fine home building and one of the editors is following me on instagram makes me nervous . I've really been impressed with some of the work people are doing and the helpfulness of the community. if I toss out a question about a material or tool I get a solid answer from people who I can see their work and know their quality

That may very well be true but the magazine doesn't really reflect that very often

...^^^... That reminds me of some very large homes (5,000 sq ft.) in an outer suburb of the city (lower land costs there).

I asked the builder why the quality was so low (materials & labor) and he explained this to me ....

With some foreigner group that come here with good jobs ... i.e. doctors, computers etc ... that they are judged back home by the size of their house and not the quality of it.

So they pick big over better ... and that works for a while until the house has issues ... but they have moved on by then.

PS They like a lot of bathrooms and wet bars ... they look really cheap ... but I have seen 6 bathrooms and 4 wet bars before ... and that is also asked (back home) to measure success in their new land. It's common to see wet bars in the master bedrooms in those houses

Some factors of success in USA is measured below:

    (1) size of house
    (2) number of bathrooms
    (3) number of wet bars
    .

Fully custom home, by one of the "better" (former and out of buisness) builders in the area, they own a couple car dealerships and I've taken over all their house needs. some of the work is top notch, most of the issues are just poor attention to details by the builder and his trades. I'm there right now for a material failure, and to add another attic access
