    Hey all,

Was underneath the truck today replacing my original starter. Truck has 75K on her, 2005 prerunner, and it quit starting on me.

Anyhow, while I was under her I found this wire disconnected from a bracket that is connected the the bottom of the transmission near it's oil pan. I'm unsure of what it's purpose is, however it feeds back into a box which has two lines coming out of it that connect to the rear drum brakes.

Could anyone help identify what this is for?

Much appreciated and thanks in advance.

auto shift lever cable. Surprised you didnt have any issues with the use of your trans, especially park engaging or disengaging. Re-connect it and adjust it properly.

I'm as surprised as you are my friend. Is there supposed to be a nut on this thing? Otherwise it seems like it will just pop out whenever conditions are right for it to do so...

    Thanks again.

The shift cable coming loose can definitely cause a no start symptom. Your original starter may still be good.

I see. Is park the upward position that it is in now?

This is how I found it after I drove it last. Not being in park would be a damn good explanation for not starting.

The cable assembly is probably still adjusted properly. I would just reconnect the cable to the lever and shift it back to park and see if it starts. If it doesn't start then I would adjust the assembly.

Well, I do recall that when I was taking the front wheel off, I neglected to block the wheels and the car was able to roll backwards by quite a bit.

I thought that it was weird how it rolled so much and that my parking mechanism may have been broken. Did not think anything of it at the time but now I'm scratching my head.

The new starter gets delivered today. She still had the original in her, so I'll put the new one in anyhow just for peace of mind. It was 75$. I intend to keep this truck for quite a while, just purchased this past August.

I would leave the factory starter installed.

What brand did you buy as a replacement? I would keep it as a spare or just send it back.
