3rd Gen Owners who previously owned a 2nd Gen

I joined this forum back in 09' when I bought my double cab longbed TRD Sport with 5 miles. I'm ready to admit I adore the truck, but had always wished I had sprung for the 4x4. Now I'm ready to pull the trigger and trade her in, but the 3rd Gen issues started making me think I should find a very nice 2015 2nd Gen instead. Tundras are nice, but between gas mileage and parking the beast have helped me decide to stick with a Taco once again.

Those of you who purchased a 3rd Gen- would you do it again, or go back to a late model 2nd Gen?

 

I did this. 2009 TRD OR before. TRD Pro now. My 2009 has no technology, so the new truck seems miles ahead. After driving the new truck, the old truck felt like it was made out of bamboo.

I do press the ECT button all the time on the new truck. I may pursue a supercharger if a warrantied factory one comes out.

Answer: Yes, I'd do it again. Payments suck, but I'll just cut my beer budget in half.

 

I would absolutely buy a 3rd gen again. A lot nicer than my 2010. I have had it since June and zero problems.

 

As a side note, I thought for sure I would have to get a longbed again, but drove a short bed 15' the other day. Much nicer turning radius obviously, but the shocker was it drove much more refined than I imagined a shorty would.

 

I had a '13 2nd Gen, 3rd Gen blows that sucker away! Of course that's my opinion, others may differ.

 

I had a 2014 2nd gen but it was a 2.7

Now on my third third gen

Loving the 3.5 even for its flaws lol

I will say my 2017 has been a lot better then my previous 2016...

I had my 09' transmission software flashed as it had "issues" when I first got it with up-shifting as you were coasting to a stop, it has been perfect ever since.. TSB'ed the melting headlights and TSB'ed the rear springs to 4 leaf and that was it. Obviously these are getting worked out as far as I am reading with the 3rd Gen, so obviously things aren't that crucial as some folks bitch about.

I liked my 2nd gen but I also like my 3rd gen. Sure, I'd buy either again.

 

I had a 1st gen taco, then a 1st gen Tundra, then a Duramax 2500HD and now a 3rd gen OR 4x4. I passed over a '15 2nd gen after a back to back test drive with an apples to apples 3rd gen.

It's the nicest driving truck I've ever owned by a wide margin.

**DISCLAIMER: I have a manual 6 speed and if I was shopping for an auto trans I'd probably not have bought a Tacoma. It resists fun.

I've had no problems out of my truck either. Traded in my 2009 for the 2016. I think a lot of the people complaining on here are just impatient. The trucks aren't driving off cliffs and exploding on startup like some other brands have done. There's vibrations, or delayed shifting, all of which Toyota is fixing. People just like to complain. Good for them, they get Toyota to produce TSB's for the rest of us. I drive a truck, not a sports car, there may be vibrations sometimes. Whatever.

 

I had a 05 SR5 access cab 4l 4x4,I do believe it had more power than my 2017 3.5l 4x4, has trouble pulling a empty single axle cargo trailer where the 05 didn't have this much of issue,the 2017 is a lot more comfortable and has way more bells and whistles.

You'll likely do much better to sell outright yourself.

And for me it actually makes the buying process easier, because you remove one of the elements that the salespeople like to play you with. Like having one less shell in the old shell and pea game.

For all that scream 'sales tax offset', if you know how to do your homework, your sale price will more than compensate for that.

Back on topic, I don't have a 3gen. so I can't comment on would I do it again. Problem is, I don't want one. Not for all the reasons/complaints we see around here, but for several other reasons. I'm quite content with my '13, as it serves the purposes I need a truck for quite well.

 

This depends on how much you value your time. A trade in at the stealership: your paying for convenience.

Selling outright will net you more money, but will also cost you more time. I used sell the truck on my own and take that money to buy a new truck. That required me to clean it up, research values, post everywhere, do meetups and test drives, deal with *those* people who can't commit, transfer title, figure out taxes (god forbid the buyer is in another state), and all this has to be timed right so I'm not left without a vehicle for too long before I can buy the new truck.

Now I just prefer to walk in with a dirty truck and walk out with a brand new one an hour later with the same plates and no trip to the DMV. The taco holds it's value very well and now there are tools in the palm of your hand to tell you if the trade in is reasonable and the price on the new truck is good. So it's not like you have to argue a lot. You should already know what your losing, so you just have to determine if that's worth your time. And as I get older, I'm starting to wish I had paid a little more on some things and gotten back a little of my time.

I got a ridiculously good deal on my new truck, which is what prompted me to buy. I was going to drive my 09 until it exploded and then buy whatever new Tacoma was out at the time. My 09 was thrashed and beaten with 140k miles and they still gave me 14k for it. I probably couldn't have sold it privately for much more than that.

 

I've definitely given that consideration, but if it takes a few weeks to sell, the cost of renting a car will eat up any profit I would have made for sure.

Shame honestly, because a truck that has been so well cared for with Mobil-1 from 2nd oil change, all TSB's done, and all receipts will likely have the proof and paperwork of all that trashcanned the day it goes back to the dealer...

 

Came from 2nd Gen '12 sport. It was a great truck, no complaints. The 3rd is a nice evolution. Great fit and finish and an interior that is worlds better than my 2nd Gen. It feels more solid structurally.

 

I've owned 4 toyotas over the years. See my signature, one of each generation. if you told me I had to pick a single one here is the order I would pick.

2nd Gen
Pre-gen

 

I've had two 2nd gens purchased new, 2009 and 2014.
Now the 2016. I'd definitely pick the 3rd gen cuz I'm a new truck whore.
But if I were to find a clean used X-Runner. I'd rock that but that's just me.

 

I've trade my 2nd Gen 2006 trd sport with OME complete suspension kit for this 3rd Gen 2016 trd sport and i have no regret at all, yes i'll do it again anytime.

3rd gen are way more modern, i don't have any issue with this truck, now at 8 000km(5 000 miles) and i love everything of this truck. All I miss is a suspension lift.

 

Why? Wouldn't think there is much a need or places to use it in Florida...
