Bummer. I imagine my work schedule will mess some of this up for me. Regardless if I request time off way in advance. I got a lot of responsibility so I got to put work first most of the time.

:( thats just sad in general.

As a father I couldn't imagine using a child as a tool. Even before I was a parent I couldn't imagine it either.

Its gonna be rough for me to take that time off too but you just gotta make time for vacations like this or life will pass you by. I use to miss out on some great stuff cause I'm always worried about work.

Eastern Sierras are my shit. Namely because its all so close. I can be in Alabama Hills looking at Mt Whitney in 3 hrs. Coyote Flats is a spot ill be hitting as well. From lone pine to Yosemite and Bridgeport, we can go anytime between spring and fall. There will be a few 3 day weekends spent in the Sierras.

Looks to be the same and the mod is called weatherman it allows you to run a higher frequency. when people that don't have the mod try to talk to you you can't hear them but you can talk to them. it runs frequencies from 150 to 165

I'll add a little bit to the discussion to clarify.

For V/UHF radio comms, power is usually the least important factor. If you can talk to someone with 5 watts, and you then use 50 watts, it's is not going to make any difference at all on the receiving end, you'll be heard just the same. For reference, each time you double your transmit power, it only results in 3 dB gain. So the difference between 5W vs. 50W is like a 9 db.

As an example, at my home I use 5W to talk to mountain top repeaters 40 miles away, no problems. The resistor I took out of my radio will allow my radio to transmit outside the ham bands, to be used only during an emergency.

A proper antenna should be central to a good install. For vehicle installs I recommend a 1/2 wave antenna for VHF. It is much more tolerant when ground plane is small or non-existent. The Larsen 2/70B is a great choice.

Second to antenna, should be a good transceiver. Kenwood / Yaesu / ICOM for ham gear.

The race radios you mentioned are good hardware, but they are not field programmable, hence are virtually useless for a licensed HAM operation.

My advice, is get your amateur radio license, and a field programmable radio. An alternative to that is a GMRS license which grants you privileges in the UHF spectrum, and up to 50w Mobile power. Then you just need a radio programmed for right freqs.

Lastly, although the risk is very low IMO, transmitting with a race radio (VHF), or HAM gear, without the right license is illegal.
