That awesome moment when it's all ice in Washougal, WA and the taco is in full beast mode! Plus a majority of other rigs getting to work that I saw...other TACOS!

I have 4WD. so, yes it is! :cookiemonster:

I also prefer to do it while texting and eating cereal.

(on a serious note) The news always does a good job of finding that one person in a large SUV and interviewing them: "I have 4wd so I can drive normally and feel safe"

I tried doing the math last night (guessing at stuff like mire factor, etc) and I just couldn't get things to equate out. The closest I came said that, provided the vehicle was 22,904lbs and you were using the full 8,000 lbs strength of the winch, and the stuck vehicle was trying to reverse, you would have needed 5 snatch blocks. I gave it up and went to bed, but I'll probably look at it again later, just because it interested me.

The only thing I would say is be careful how you are presenting the power of any winch - the recovery you had was done on flat ground, moving against the original line of travel to increase mechanical advantage, a straight pull, multiple snatch blocks. A lot of guys would think, "oh sweet, I can buy that winch and haul out all my buddies all day on the trail." However, those guys could be experiencing HARDER pulls due to poor angles (horizontal and vertical), greater mire factors, pulling in the wrong direction, etc., etc... and most don't use any additional snatch blocks. The trail doesn't always make it easy, even if you know what you are doing.
It looks like you know what you are doing and take the time to think it out, but it's very rare to see an offroader who properly respects the forces at play.

Worked from home yesterday, today is my standard WFH day :) I agree with what you say. There's a 4 way intersection near my place, 4 lane with left turn lanes, 45MPH traffic. Every time it gets even wet, there's guys drifting the left turns. Worst I saw was a mid-80s Nissan just about full-on sideways by the time he got out of the intersection. He looked damn pro doing it, but almost biffed the curb with the rear wheel before straightening up.
I'd love to hoon but I always figure I'd cock it up

My concern in that situation would be burning out the motor (high amp draw without the drum actually turning.) Warn does make a tough winch, and it worked out for this guy. One of those situations where you'd rather have a much larger winch. But you make do with what you have, and an affordable, capable winch that you actually have is better than a bigger, more expensive winch that you don't!

I keep looking at those trucks on the GovPlanet auctions. If they had a larger cab (4 seats), I'd be all over one. But then again, so would everyone else!

Agreed. Although, I would hope that I'm not digging those guys out regularly. It really was a situation that wasn't really planned. I was just going out to watch and hang with the guys.

The owner of the Unimog has been scoping out a winch for his rig, just hasn't gotten it yet. This was motivation.

Hey, just another question that I couldn't decipher from what you wrote, were you winching in during the recovery, or were you just static on the line? One thing that always bugged me is that WARN doesn't use a 100% load holding brake, and it almost drove me to getting the SuperWinch. I just didn't like the idea of going to Spokane if the winch ever died, so that's why I got the WARN.

I was winching in during the recovery.

I was attached rear-to-rear to the Unimog with a strap. The combination of the Tacoma and Unimog were static. The only load pulling the LMTV was coming from my winch pulling in. The LMTV driver was in reverse and on the gas rocking his front wheels left/right trying to break that seal.

Firestone in Renton Highlands. At least a few of us go there and paid for lifetime alignment.

Ya black diamond had zero snow, more like frozen rain. I was stoked to get out there this morning and play in a few inches. But Nope! Just like that supposed wind storm that was supposed to hit in november. I heard down past olympia got a ton of snow

    Did you redo your math?

I also see where you're coming from on the rating of the winch, to be weary. Margins are always key. We knew this and threw it to the wind, or so to speak. We had protocols we had agreed upon to abort if sounded or felt like anything was going to go wrong. It wasn't a blind, "Hey, let's do this!" like you sometimes get with guys.

This was a best case scenario, a flat, straight pull, with some of the right equipment. I already had a couple of people tell me that the winch should be able to hold the truck up vertically then. Uh...no. Pulling something sideways is way different than vertical. At an angle? No. That reduces your force by the angle being present, the cosine of that angle. Reduce it to 0° and you have full pull. Anything else and you're diminished.

So my new tablet has a phone number that used to belong to some girl, and I guess she has weird friends who have been trying to text her. So I decided to have a little fun.
