How do you carry extra fuel?

They are all over government auctions. If you are near a military post, check there first. I find most of mine littered in the field and leftover. The only thing I would recommend is the appropriate donkey dick for refueling operations. Their are several on ebay for about 40-50 US. Without them you are pretty much going to spill fuel everywhere, get the plastic not the old metal spout with the friction ring. Scepter brand is all over it. I got three mounted on a half swing gate.

I use a spare LATCH belt from my kids old carseat, basically a seatbelt with hooks on each end.

 

During Hurricane Sandy, the power was out for weeks and there was a severe gasoline shortage. There was a rash of people buying plastic hose from Home Depot/Lowes and such so they could siphon off gas from their vehicles and transfer to their home generators. NO CAN DO.

Even boats have anti-siphon fuel features nowadays. I know someone that actually punctured the tank of his boat to get at his fuel for his generator.

 

Yeah, lots of vehicles like the Toyotas have anti-siphon screens in the filler neck but all vehicles after a certain date, which I can't recll at the moment, have anti-spill rollover valves to help prevent fuel from leaking in the event of a roll-over. It's a great idea but you know how that goes; now the thieves punch a hole in your tank, take what they can and leave the rest draining onto the ground and you with a very expensive gas tank to replace.

Back when I was in college in the 80s lots of folks kept a section of garden hose in their vehicle for emergency use; commonly called a Mexican gas card or other non-PC name.

So obviously scepter and rotopax are the way to go but is there a reason metal jerry cans arent more popular, at least for someone on a budget?

Reason I ask is i found a good looking one on craigslist for $20 and was wondering if it was worth picking up. Any thoughts?

 

I just put cheap gas cans in the truck bed, never failed me.

I want to get either a cap or a toolbox to keep them in at some point.

 

For twenty bucks or less you can get a new 5 gallon red gas can at Wal-Mart.

I keep my cheap cans in the snow, and treat them like the cheap plastic they are. Never had an issue, and some of my cans are 10+ years old.

No reason in my eyes to buy an expensive gas can aside from aesthetics.

 

I wanted something that would & could bolt to the side of my bed, be lockable, and carry 5 gallons of extra Fuel. only option available would be a Jerry Can

 

If you want to save money have you considered using a cheap gas can, and making your own locking system?

Just to throw it out there, I'm sure you could build a secure lockable setup for under fifty bucks with one trip to home depot.

If you wanna use cheap cans thats fine , they just aren't the best cans , I use the Scepters because they sit in my cap and there is zero leakage or gas smell

I would use nothing but the Scepter MFCs if they weren't so hard to find and ridiculously expensive in the States. Next time I am in BC a stop by Princess Auto or somewhere similar is in the plan. Problem is it seems that Canada trips are rare for me.

The spout they sell does not appear to be the vented style so I would pass on that and find a properly vented one.

My niece said she would pick up a couple of MFC's and an MWC from Princess Auto in Toronto. 150 USD. Damn, the Canadian exchange rate sucks, but benefited me.
