Interesting read on Toyota next generation engines and transmissions.
    Link- http://www.automobilemag.com/news/toyota-announces-new-powertrains-doubles-hybrids/

It talks about a new 8 speed and 10 speed transmissions coming down the pipeline pretty soon. I imagine the Tacoma will get the 8 speed sooner rather than later. Especially with quite a few folks not happy with the 6 speed automatic currently offered. With the 8 speed coming, it makes me wonder if Toyota just kind of threw that 6 speed automatic in there to get it by.
It also talks about a much improved 2.5 liter engine. I wonder if some version of that might find it's way into the Tacoma in a year or two?

Next Tacoma generation will be a hybrid, almost guaranteed.

trust me, you don't want a 8 spd in a truck or suv. remember if your in 8th gear and you need to pass, remember it has to shift down 2-5 gears to get going. this will be a lot more noticeable in a truck or suv compared to a car.

I bet they come out with a 5.0L 350 HP 700ft/lb diesel matted to a 10-speed on the tacoma.

We have over 2k miles on the 8 speed in a 2017 Sienna. While my wife drives it more, my experience is that it is much better than the 6 we had in our 2016. With a well thought out ECT and/or towing button I think it would be a good choice in the Tacoma. Not better than my 6MT though :)

Had a 8 speed auto in my Ram 1500 and it was an amazing transmission. The gears are spaced so close a lot of the times I would not even notice the downshifts. It also allows for lower gearing in the transmission which in turn helps out in the power dept.

And owners don't like it, according to the local Toyota service manager. I've never driven one but the SM said they're getting lots of complaints about it and the Tacoma.

I read the the new, jointly developed, 10spd used by Ford and GM is fantastic.

And the year after they'll have a CVT transmission with infinite ratios.

I would think that new transmission (s) in the 2018 Tacoma will piss off a lot of folks who jumped at the 2016 / 17 models with the crappy 6 speed. So much for your resale value....So glad I resisted the temptation
