Throw out bearings and synchros are munched like crazy on those 6 speeds. I have driven a couple of them, one of them with 2k miles on it and it grinded into 3rd if you tried to rush it.

146,000km's on my 08 6spd. No issues with shifting.

It doesn't shift like a GTI, but if you harbor any reasonable degree of finesse it shifts nicely.

I am sorry Toyota doesn't put these in their long beds.

Depends on your driving and circumstances. Ive been dealing with a lot more traffic and commuting with work so the auto is a welcome change. Nothing worse then bumper to bumper traffic and a manual, after the first hour of traffic your leg is ready to fall off

My winter commute is ~400 mi / wk. ~90% of that is snow and ice so the 6MT is really the only option.

I know there are a lot of garage queens, stay a home daddies and the california crowd out there in this thread that wouldn't be able to even turn over a truck with an MT in it.....so OP my vote is for you to get what you NEED.

FWIW 6MT TRD OR are no longer available in the US so if you're looking for something to invest in that would be it.

Kerrigan is right. MT is great unless you're stuck creeping thru city traffic. But maybe the Taco isn't best suited for that environment!

The 6 Speed Manual Off Road is still available in the new 3rd Gen's, you have to get it in a Double Cab though, no longer offer it in Access Cabs.

This is why I got a 4 banger.
    I love the access cab.

I had a second gen trd off road mt access cab. Absolutely loved that truck. Never really needed the extra features it had, but I would love to own another one.

    Sorry...should have been crystal:

6MT TRD OR ACLB is now extinct.
If you're looking for equity on 4 wheels that's what you should invest in. Or an import scheme on 3'rd gen 6MT TRD OR ACLB with USA dash / trip computerz.

One issue that hasn't been brought up is the throttle lag on these trucks. If you are used to shifting performance vehicles, this will drive you nuts. I have always driven manuals, but when I got my Tacoma, I had to learn to slooooow waaaaaay dooooown. There is a momentary delay between letting off the gas, and actually having the RPM drop to shift. That is the cause of much of the gear grind that people experience. The more skilled you are with a manual, the more the issues with it will drive you nuts. If you shift slow and easy, you will likely never notice it. If you came from a racing background as I have, and are used to snappy upshifts and downshifts, forget it.

I wonder if it has anything to do with what year or something cuz I dont experience any of these issues at all... my 6 speed works just as slick as my 1st gens 5 speed ever did.

Flywheel weight? Race cars have light flywheels so the engine can spin up faster.

What you're describing is exactly what I experienced with my T100 after driving a 93 2wd Toyota Pickup with 22RE. Shifting fast was not easy without gear grinding. So I stopped trying to shift fast.

Well, yes flywheel weight is a factor in a race car, but most street vehicles drop RPM pretty quickly. The Tacoma is throttle by wire, and computer controlled. I wish it just had a cable.

TRD Exhaust, Mobtown bolt on sliders and aluminum tailgate reinforcement, Reverse lights changed to yellow turn signals, LED pods added for reverse, ADD W1 oil catch can, Total Chaos bed reinforcement, rear diff breather to taillight mod, 12" combo led bars behind lower grill wired to high beams, Toyota led bed light kit, 400 watt anytime mod, SSO slimeline front bumper.

The throttle lag is a programing choice Toyota made to reduce emissions, unfortunately that choice does adversely affect the driving experience. I still prefer the manual over auto for many reasons, better control, funner/better cornering, lower gearing better off road towing, etc.

There isn't a single advantage to buying an auto besides the lac of effort. Manuals are cheaper, more efficient, easier to fix, more reliable, better throttle response, better torque, better capabilities (in terms of control), somewhat of a security device, and most obviously, fun as shit!!
