    https://vimeo.com/195047500Hey, guys!

New to the forums. I picked up a new Tacoma a couple months back. Had an issue with a whistle noise at idle. Brought it into the dealer and they tracked it down to a loose exhaust manifold bracket bolt. That noise went away but there's this chirping noise going on at idle now that won't go away. I took it in again last week and they told me they couldn't get a consistent noise out of it and that it's been documented. A task case was created and they told me to drive it for a while and see if it gets worse. I took a video. Very annoying chirping going on. Sounds like birds are in the engine bay. Any idea as to what this is? Seems like it's coming from the passenger side of the engine. I've made an appointment with another dealer to see if they can figure it out. Truck has 1300 miles on it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I love the truck but this chirp is driving me crazy. Thanks in advance!

    Adam

High pressure fuel pump is the most likely. Mines noisy as well. Sounds like a belt squeak.

Mine has this too. Its either a fuel pump or a pulley in my guess. I cant believe some of the freeplay/slop in these idler pulleys.
Just drive it....Seems if we fix one squeak another appears. Turn the radio up and enjoy the drive :)

It's not a huge deal but, how annoying. I roll up to another car and it sounds like crickets singing.

That's what I initially thought. Tensioner/Pulley.. Truck is great, otherwise. Threw some Winterforce studded UV's on it and drove up to Vail the other day. Handles like a champ!

    Same issue

I went to the dealer and they told me is the fuel pump. But because im in the process to get my truck repurchased they will not fix nothing in my truck.

    Mostly stuff I built.
Had the same issue on mine and found that running non ethanol fuel makes the chirping go away. There are several apps for locating fuel stations that have non ethanol fuel.

It is a common issue on the Scion FRS too same fix for the noise works on them too.

I had this... had the fuel pump changed.. it went away for 500 miles and came back with the new pump... toyota knows about this and a master tech said they are designing a new pump... maybe its bs. I dont run crap gas and it makes the noise less... i think the better quality stations use detergents to "quite" the valves and that seems to work on the chirp. I still have it but when I use ARCO the chirp is so loud that I can hear it with the windows up and radio on really loud.. Plus I feel stupid running down the road with that stupid chirp.

Its a design flaw. They know it.

Switch to arco for a tank and get it really loud and make them replace your pump.

I believe that is the injector cleaning sound. It should last for about 5 minutes.

That chirping is not present in my engine... and I can certainly tell when the cleaning cycle is active - Like another member said - "sounds like there's a cup of gravel in the engine". Plus, you can make it stop with the slightest of throttle input.

This thread is the first time I've seen the chirp correlated to running different quality/mixes of fuel though - interesting. FWIW, I avoid running anything but pure gas in my Taco.

Man, that sucks! Yeah, it's pretty crappy to hear that sound as you're driving. I'm not sure if the "task" case will even benefit us. I'll try the cheaper gas to see if it gets louder. Thanks!

Hopefully, that's the case. It would've been nice to hear that from the dealer. They left me with a "We have no idea" kinda response.

Yeah, from what I can tell, it's not on cold starts. After it's been driven for a few minutes it happens.

Now that you mention the gravel sound, we actually heard that as the shop foreman was inspecting the truck. That noise happened at the perfect time. I was like, "What the hell is that"? He said it was the high pressure fuel pump and that its normal. If you feather the gas just a tiny bit, the chirp goes away but comes right back. I'm in Denver and the highest quality around here is 91. I can handle leaf spring noises and stuff like that but this drives me NUTS! I can't quiet it down with grease. lol

Sounds very much like fuel pump chirp. My truck has it along with a number of others. It is only present during idle for me, as soon as im on the gas it goes away. Had dealer look at it, they are aware of it but there is no fix right now (same issue affected the Toyota FRS as well). Driving around in summer with the windows down it really started to get annoying. When the weather starts to get warmer I plan on bringing it back to the dealer.

Considering I have a FRS as well and the chirp is part of my daily life, no worries. Nothing is defective, broken or detrimental so theres no use going back and forth to the dealer. There is NO fix. Its just the way the HPFP is designed (probably for D4S specifics). The only way is to experiment with different brand fuels. Exxon by my house is quieter than Shell so I just go there to minimize chirps. I believe it gets quieter the more ethanol content it has.
