Dude, I'm glad I reverse park 98% of the time or else that ABS would have kicked in when I applied brake pressure reversing out!

I literally almost fell on my ass as I took my first step in my driveway to get to my truck because it was so icy. I'm out in Beaverton and drove to Vancouver. Neighborhood roads were horrible but main roads were fine.

Suppose to get more snow - go get some sandbags! I got 5 60# sandbags from home Depot on my rear axle.

    Be safe!

No one ever said it wasn't as effective. It's just a waste of money. You're putting an expensive offroad recovery tool on a truck not intended for trail use.

A winch on a 2wd is like fake tits on an overweight woman. Lots of money wasted on the wrong host.

But WHY is it like fake tits on an overweight woman? Fake tits isn't a good analogy for me because I hate fake tits. No one has told me why it's a waste of money - just that it is. I called out it's efficacy because logically that's the only reason I can think of why that might be.

A winch is used when the tires cannot provide adequate traction to overcome the obstacle.

When you only have power to one tire, you should probably address that first.

    Fwiw...

I see this a few times a week.

Recently personally got rear ended on the freeway. I was at a full stop, and someone going about 70 hit me.

Still recovering financially and physically/ medically.

Hit my head pretty hard, really messed with me for a while. Had to go on paid leave at work. Used up all my paid leave for the year, and had to go a few days without pay. My passenger was a veteran who's body is held together by steel plates thanks to an IED in the gulf, crash banged him up pretty bad too.

The force of me getting rear ended caused my vehicle to hit the vehicle in front of me causing a chain reaction which lead to a 6 car pileup.

It was like a scene from a horror movie.

Still battling all the insurance companies even though the accident was 0% my fault.

Some people just don't understand how much energy is behind a moving vehicle. Some people don't understand the possible consequences of poor driving habits.

I'm not playing a little violin / sob story, just a reality check. Not directed at OP either, just a story to share relating to the quote.

Honestly, just call it a Monday and be done with it. If you can stay home and the roads aren't bad most of the year, just keep your truck. I have a 4x4, but here in Wyoming we can see a lot of snow and ice for 9 months of the year. I had a two wheel drive truck for a lot of years, didn't work out for me. When I lived in Florida it was all I needed. That's a lot of money you could be using to stock up on beer!!!

    Haha

Hey man, try not to take the comments too personal.
The advice being given here is good advice/insight.

If you really don't want a 4x4 then just tell everyone to fuck off.
Maybe get an awd Subaru outback or something:rofl:

Oh, I get it, as the pic of my poor Tacoma just below might suggest. Still having upper back issues 3 months later... And there was no excuse like ice for the other driver in that one.

Op, have you ever even driven a 4x4?

I don't think you realizehow worthless 2wd is for anything besides dry pavement.

For the money it would cost to properly install a wench you could put a down payment on a new truck.

Think about it like this, say you got your kids in the car, you start losing traction, go into oncoming traffic....

Never needed a wench with a 4x4, and I've hit some deep ass mud. Because with a 4x4 I never get stuck.

Now a 2wd truck, I've lost control in those and got em stuck more times than I can count. I'll never own one again, they are too dangerous for anything besides sunny warm pavement.

Go into the mud with 2wd and you better never stop, because you sure as hell won't get moving again.

I would say mount front and rear flamethrowers. Just put a few large propane cylinders in the bed and go for it!

Isn't that what the rear diff lock button does? I can only go 2 at a time.. ;)

Regardless, I don't think having 8 tires moving at once one have mattered a damn bit today. A winch would have. Chains would have. The bull bar was debatable, sure... I over estimated the truck given the conditions. Willing to bet we all do at some point, be it snow, mud, rocks, whatever... thus the reason for a winch in the first place. Even big dick Sold his Subaru probably does or has in the past. If folks can't back up what they're saying with facts, then I'll debate them for days :D

lol, I'm not. I could troll that guy for days... everyone knows crocodiles are cold blooded and would be tits up in 30 min with this weather ;)
I'm not upset by any means. Seems like most of ya'll are pretty cool and I'm all for good advice and insight - it's why I'm here in the first place... But if someone told me it was good advice to drive my pee-runner off a cliff, I'm damn sure going to need to know why before I hit the gas.
THat sucks real bad, man. I'm sorry that happened to you. It's scary shit. Hope you and your buddy are ok and get better... I certainly don't condone people doing stupid shit on the roads - and that's exactly why the truck stayed put today after my failure until the ice had melted. It could have been a lot worse, and I'm well aware I was lucky.

Exactly what I did. If she couldn't handle the driveway, sure as shit wasn't going to handle the uphill road out to the main road, and I was ok with it ;)

Your truck ain't nothing but a pavement princess unless you keep some of these in your truck bed.

Um my Tacoma was parked in my inclined driveway last night. Didn't go anywhere all day yesterday. Came out this morning and it was almost in the street. Portland freezing rain is the worst.

Does a Humvee count? I suspect so. Does a Humvee in -60 degree weather on the ice and snow in Alaskan tundra count? I suspect so, and damn that was fun.

The oncoming traffic situation can happen in anything. I'm not a 16yr old with a new license, guys lol. When I was a kid growing up in MI, I packed the bed of my Mazda B2200 full of snow for the traction and did just fine. I still wished it was front wheel drive though. I get it. 4x4 is fuckin rad, and shame on me for not having one. Just thought I'd share my misfortune in this rare shitty weather.

Now let's lighten the mood a bit... Why hasn't Walmart been hacked yet?

Man, once I was back in the driveway that was a legit concern... I spent some extra time breaking more ice behind the tires and more litter hoping she'd stay put. Didn't budge, thankfully.

I had to block the tires last year after being out and about. Last night was a head scratcher cause the truck was in the driveway before the storm even started.

Coming home from mt hood yesterday was pretty interesting. Went hood river post skiing which ended up being an awful decision. Drove 35-40mph from mt hood meadows to Portland with a pit stop at pFriem. all in all it was an 4.5 hour commute. 4x4 with ko2s didn't have an issue, only 1 scare when I took it out of 4 high into 2wd coming down 84 just before troutdale. I've never flicked that 4wd switch so damn fast!

Stay safe out there my friends, and keep it in 4wd :)
