@fynflood my hat's off to you! I would've lost my shit awhile ago with everyone telling me I need 4x4, not to get a winch, etc. If you want the winch, then get it! They can come in handy more times than you would think. Plus then you can be a good guy and help recover other people in a ditch.

Proper winter tires, and you don't need the other stuff.

(BTW, a bull bar doesn't help anyone with anything. )

Can I ask why non-clumping? Will the clumping factor really take away from adding traction?

I throw 4 - 35lb tubs of cat litter in the truck for winter to add weight, and then come summer we use them with our cats. It's nice not having to find a place to store sand bags, but we use the clumping kind. The primary purpose is weight, but I thought I could crack one open if I ever get stuck.

I'm so paranoid sometimes that I probably would have tied the front of the truck to something with my tow strap...

Agreed. @fynflood - There are some sweet low profile winch bumpers out there or if you decide against a winch and just need some mall armor, check out the avid bumper guard/ light bar.

I can feel your pain Flyn. I live up the I-5 corridor from ya but didn't get hit with the ice, just 8" of snow. With any truck, 2wd or 4wd that I have owned going back to the 60's I put about 240 pounds of tube sand over the rear axle. Used to get used truck inner tubes, cut 'em up, using rebar wire tie one end, fill with sand and tie the other end off. One big sausage! Now I go down to Home Depot and simply get 4-5 premade tube's. Cheap.

Here's one. It's just a Velcro strap on the tie downs at the back of the bed.

Save yourself some money sand bags in the back for extra weight. if you have cash a legit snow tire especially studded will help tremendously

Might want to think about want and additional 90+ lbs in front of your front axle will do for traction on your drive axle....it certainly won't improve things for your truck

Shoot...I live in Hillsboro and ice storms like that around here suck. Id be worried about my damn truck sliding back down my driveway. Your truck, you should get whatever you want! Can't see how a winch couldn't come in handy on anything, regardless. :) Maybe we should have a Santiam Pass beer party.

I think it is more of a storage issue with the clumping that anything. If it gets damp it'll solidify while the non clumping or sand will not.

Yep, putting more weight on the front will just give him less traction on the rear tires. Basically making it worse.

This makes perfect sense, and the first real response anyone's given me as to why one might not put a winch on a 2x4.

    Thanks!

Even though it sounds like many are trying to rag on ya, were trying to help. :)

Oregon is a beautiful state. The forest near the coast feels like Jurassic park or something. Trying to hunt there was crazy, I need a machete to walk around that stuff.

Fishing some of the fresh water streams that went into the ocean was really fun as well.

I remember getting a powder run going night snowboarding in the middle of the summer up there by hood. That was a pretty awesome experience. Though I have to say, utah has the best powder on earth. The powder out here is fluffier, faster, and softer :duel:

The only thing that turned me off about Oregon was the politics, if it wasn't so lefty up there I'd definitely consider living there again. The only thing they have done good politically speaking is legalize weed in my opinion, otherwise the state just went way to liberal for me personally.
    Beautiful state though.

Those logging roads are awesome, and the DH mountain bike scene is sweet. I built a single speed free ride bike with 8" of front travel and 7" rear travel to mob around out there. Ended up shattering my foot on a fat ass drop I built on the north end of Forrest park :bananadance:
