(RESOLVED, T-SB-0148-16) Uninitiated trip meters reset

I made an appointment to have my meter replaced. I printed a copy of bulletin when I made my appointment with the service department just to be safe. Thanks for posting the TSB pic.

 

Took my truck on this past Monday for them to order a replacemt cluster.. Tuesday they told me the part is on back order. No delivery timeframe for new components. Standing by.

 

Did you have to leave your truck at the dealer?

 

Truck is at the dealer. Cluster can't be ordered otherwise. Not a happy situation.
Not to mention, 90 minutes drive.

 

6 days? Was the cluster needing to be backordered?
Important to know, don't really want to leave the truck TOO long.

 

T-SB-0148-16 Trip meter resets, completed. It only took a year.
Without going into a long story; instead of leaving the truck at the shop while a new preprogrammed head was sent from the vendor (Continental) for reinstallation, Toyota elected to call me and tell them the current mileage on the truck. Toyota would then order a new head for reinstallation with the mileage I reported PLUS two hundred miles. My job was to deliver the truck for repair with no more mileage on the truck than would be programmed into the new head. (Understand, I live 80 miles from the dealer).
On Monday, Dec 5, I delivered the truck to them with 9554 actual miles on the ODO, and they installed the new head with a preprogrammed 9584 miles indicated. Took them an hour, as this was the first ODO head they had ever done. I did learn disassembly/and reinstallation is a snap. (Literally).

The truck is now in essence, TERRIFIC.

 

That is how they did mine. I drove it and kept it under a planned mileage until my new one arrived and was installed. That was nearly 5 months ago before the TSB came out.

 

All I got was run around from my two closest Toyota shops AND Toyota customer service until the TSB came out. And my knowledge of that was only the result of this forum. Go figure.
Well, I'm sure I'll be on edge for a while since I was through 17 resets over 11 months! ROFLMAO

 

Mine only happened 3 times but it was within a 2 week period. Mine was due for 5k service. Took it in and there were 4 issues that the lead tech "expert" said could not be duplicated or that Toyota had no knowledge. I jumped on TW and found this issue from April. Another member kindly send me a copy of his record, via a TW conversation, where his cluster was replaced for the same reason. I made videos of all my issues. Made copies of youtube videos of other issues and sent all to Corporate. A week later the dealer got real nice and fixed everything. I blame it on Corporate not sharing info with dealers until a TSB is released. My truck was built 12/15. Bought it 1/2/16. Most issues starting showing up around April and May. The only remaining issue is a transmission minor flare from 1-2 and 2-3. I did have the tranny TSB done in late July. Everything else is great. Never had another reset in the past 3500 miles.
The lesson I learned is to gather as much evidence to support your issue before going to the dealer. When you have video proof they cannot deny it exists.

 

I just had my fourth (?) incidence of this. It annoys the heck out of me and then all is fine for a few thousand miles (my truck has just over 25K) and I forget about it. Thanks for the tips on the "not to exceed" mileage, because I certainly don't plan to leave it at a dealership for a week.

 

Honestly the dealer never suggested that I leave it which was cool. There was nothing in writing. It was basically an honor system agreement. I don't think they would have denied my repair if I had a few more miles on it. I made a very big stink about the issues they would not address on my 5k visit so they did not want me contacting Corporate again.

 

Concerning the Auto-tranny issue, I seem to be one of the few people who got a good one. It shifts as often as it needs to, with no surging or anything else the TSB describes. I thought about having the revision done, but I'm afraid it would 'Create more problems than enhance.

 

My truck has been with the dealer for over two weeks now, waiting on a new gauge cluster to come in. "hopefully sometime this week" is the time frame I've been given.

But, I'm in a loaner taco... So I'm only missing a few things (like the sunglasses I left in the sunglasses holder, and blind spot monitor/dual-zone/thermostat-ac).

 

My resets are happening more frequently now, but I'm really hesitant (i.e. unwilling) to lose my truck for two weeks, though to be fair to my dealership I haven't talked with them about it. Question to those who have or had the problem, is their any other symptom of the bad gauge cluster that's more serious than the trip odor reset, or can I ignore it for a while. I'd say it's happened about every 500 miles recently; otherwise I can't see much of a pattern of miles, time, usage.

 

So, it seems theres two different ways this Meter replacement is done. (And I saw them both!).
1) Leave your truck with them, and they will order a new meter with the actual ODO value set.
2) The dealer will get a call from the vendor saying WHEN a new meter can be sent; when that date is said, the dealer can call YOU to tell them your current ODO reading, they will give you a fixed value NOT TO EXCEED, then you take the truck to them for the replacement.

I initially ran with step one, just to get a call back stating the meters were on BACKORDER, and they had NO DATE for when they would get a new meter. At that time, I went and took possession of my truck.
The next week they called, I told them the ODO value, they added 200 miles onto THAT value, and then I took the truck back for the replacement when the part came in, witrh the truck NOT HAVING EXCEEDED the value I was told not to.

Is this confusing enough?

You can elect to NEVER have the truck fixed. I personally had MORE THAN 17 resets occur from the time the truck was new, to the time I had the replacement done at about 9700 miles. The resets are seemingly totally random. In over 9700 miles and almost a year, I'd come up with numerous theories what was happening, how to avoid the resets, what I thought I was observing leading to a reset, etc.....
I believe within the head, there is a electrical component with a bad FEP. (Frickin electronic phenomena). I saw failures occur within a few hundred miles of one another, to one time the truck went over 1200 miles.
So, no. Its random, and I do not believe there is anything you can do to avoid the resets. Its a bad part. Aside from the Trip meters ZEROING themselves, and the Current display changing to MPH, I do not believe theres anything else going on which might bring problems down the road. Its just that if you want to use your Trip meters, you cannot rely on them, because they can and WILL rest to Zero at any time.

 

Mine was draining my battery every time the trip reset (when I went in, I assumed the trip reset was a symptom of dying battery, not the cause). Usually a slow start, but if below 40f,no-start.

 

Wow. I never suspected anything like that.
On a good note, for all the cases where people (like me) had the head replaced, everything has worked without flaw or fail. Personally, I HAD to have it done. I simply refused to own a new expensive quality truck with a flaw like this. Simply refused.

 

Warranty is there for a reason.

Upside: I'm exploring just how far I can push a 2wd trd offroad... Using somebody else's truck. Since I don't have to worry about long term reliability of the suspension/frame, I can really run it through the wringer without worrying too much about it.

And,of course, less miles on the leased vehicle.

 

What did you tell them to convince them to replace it?
