Good day. I have a 2011 Toyota Tacoma access cab 2x4 with 80k km. Original shocks. I'm looking to change to a shock that's good for the gravel roads I travel on. I would like to firm up the ride a bit and raise the suspension without a lift kit. Any good suggestions?

    Appreciated.

You'll have a hard time raising the suspension without a lift kit.

I also assume you're talking about washboard gravel roads?

    What's your budget?

    Not gonna happen.

Is your 'lift' for looks or function?

Washboard, loose gravel, rocks, mud, snow, snow drifts, ice. Just all around Canadian driving conditions. Budget? Best value for the buck to be considered. Lift is not necessary but thought spring overs might do a bit?

You already have coil overs in the front, leaf in the back. Shocks don't lift (or lower), they control spring ocillation.

If you are thinking of 5100s, those are used for cheap lift via preloading the OE spring when you use one of the optional spring perches. Not the choice you want for your conditions. They can be used with stiffer aftermarket springs and 0 perch to gain lift that way. You need to be careful though. You don't want too stiff, you just need control for your conditions.

Suggest you contact Marie @HeadStrong Off-Road. Share your driving conditions and let them recommend a package. If it's more than you thought you'd spend, just keep saving till you can afford it. Do it once, do it right.

Budget is important to actually help you out.

The cost of suspension components ranges from $50-2k+ in US dollars. So it's pretty important to the topic.

Hmmm... Got me thinking. I wanted to lift 2 to 3" to keep the snow from packing in the underbelly so much. Lift kits aren't cheap and hard to install with minimal tooling. Guess I will stick with good quality shocks. Recommendations?

$500 US is a basic lift. Not expensive and is 2" +/- and can be installed with $20 in hand tools.

    Depends on that budget, again.

Budgetwise I was thinking around 500 to 600 CDN.
