I've always wondered, how could you tell if a truck is 4x4?
Can you just look under and see if they have an axle up front or not?

Usually it'll have something in the cab to engage the 4x4 system...

I mean just looking at it from the outside.
Just going up to a random truck.
    Is there a way?

    Don't all 4x4's have a rear differential and non 4x4's don't.

You can tell from the outside that its a 4x4 by looking at all 4 tires..If you see mud slung on the front fenders and rear fender, it usually means that all four wheels have traction or did while they were in the mud:D

The rear diff is what ALL trucks have. That provides the power to the rear of the truck. Unless of course it is front wheel drive lol. To the OP, just look under the front of the truck and look between the tire and the body and see if there is a small axle like thing running to the tire and back into something in the truck.

Just look at the tail gate on 05-up models if it's says prerunner then it's a 2 wheel drive if it does not say prerunner then it's a 4x4 I hope this helps
