What does the crawl control do exactly?

Its a nanny feature, say you get stuck somewhere, you put it in crawl control and each wheel looks for traction and independently sends power to whatever wheel needed to pull you out, up, over, etc. Most find it to be a novelty feature, but still cool.

"Auto pilot" of sorts. It modulates the brake and throttle for you to get you out of whatever you're stuck in or dont feel comfortable trying to get out of. All you essentially have to do is steer

Sport is for people that don't off-road.

Off-Road is for people who also don't off-road but would like people to think they off-road.

Please note either model will handle the graded dirt roads commonly referred to as "off-roading".

I suggest an Off-Road, followed by making fun of sport drivers for their non-functional "skewp" while simultaneously making numerous threads asking if anybody with a sport wants to trade hoods.

Bahahaha. In general very true, some of us OR guys actually use our trucks, heck I used my Sr5 and Skewped sport off road lol, seems like OP would use his. OP go with the OR and manual since you still get the locker and ATRAC. Plus the manuals hold crazy resale value too in OR config.

Interesting. Kind of sounds like awd if I'm not mistaken?

Sounds good on paper, but I don't think I would ever use it.
My trd off road never got stuck, it was a beast.

Anyone here ever use the crawl control feature ?

I used to take a 2wd pos ranger through mud to get to hunting spots on occasion, that was pretty much just scary. I would have to keep it at about 30mph and never slow down till I hit solid ground

Good to know, sounds like another reason not to get an automatic.

Just a personal thing, I've never been satisfied with autos, and I regretted getting an Xterra for the sole reason it was an auto.

I will be fair though, that xterra was pretty boss off road. The suspension was really plush, and it handled mud admirably. The shorter wheel base I'm sure played a part in that.

Yep, last 2 tacomas where long beds, decided to go with a sb this time, I actually am really enjoying the shorter wheel base, haven't loaded the bike back there yet, but I'm sure I'll manage.

In the past, you could trick non-locking 4x4s into doing this by holding the break and applying gas until all four wheels engaged. Normal operation only applies power to two wheels, even in 4 low. I have yet to try this with my sport...Toyota says it will stall the engine.

I've used it 2 times. 1st was to try it out because I had it. 2nd Was to show some friends what it was because they were curious and listeneing to the brake system sounds like its going to break. Neither time did I actually need it. MTS does improve the traction control from my experience. Kept me going straight in sand with very little effort vs just 4wd.

Crawl controls each wheel individually. No way to do that on your own by pressing the brake.

That's why I want the off road in an access cab so bad ( like my last trd off road ). Shorter wheel base with "bigger" bed.

Although I would sacrifice bed size to get the manual transmission if need be.

The third gens really interest me. Test driving them felt really nice compared to my second gens. Could of been a placebo effect, but I am very attracted to the third gen models.

How do you guys feel about the new 3.5 compared to the 4.0?

I learned it courtesy of a mobile force protection course, that included both high speed and off-road driving.

Ya unfortunately the manual in OR only comes in DCSB. Though many will say otherwise I find little difference between the 4.0 and 3.5, numbers wise its only down 1 ft-lb in torque, most won't notice, I sure don't, but I do notice my increased MPG and after the transmission update its a rather peppy and smooth powertrain.

Ever consider the SR5? Smoother ride than the sport but cheaper than the sport or offroad. I have done some pretty extreme tuff with my stock SR5 (KO2 installed though). The only real advantage of the off-road is the locker which is seldom necessary. I believe you can get it in a AC and manual as well.

What kind of mpg have you noticed ?

My second gen trd or was a gas hog.
I averaged somewhere along the lines of 13-17 depending on how I drove..
17 would be really generous, probably more like 16 on the freeway.

My current 2.7 4x4 is averaging 21-24 ish.

Some people say there is no difference between the four banger an v6 in terms of gas mileage, but I've noticed a huge increase.
I just miss all the features my TRD OR had.

Kind of nervous about my hunting trip tomorrow, it's been raining non stop the past two days, it's going to be really muddy!
