I considered it but it's already obsolete with everyone going to LTE. Verizon has said they were planning to phase out their 3G network within 5 years or so which would affect the 300 series smart starts. Not sure how much longer AT&T will leave theirs active for those with the 200 series Smart Starts.

For the price of a DSM300 I don't see a problem with a 3-5 year lifespan if it's something you'll get use out of before replacing it with whatever comes next. I'm not counting the subscription cost but you'd have that either way.

Heck, most folks will have moved on to a new truck before then anyway.

Can anybody with the system that uses the OEM remote tell me how the A/C works with it? Do I have to preset my heater and defrost the night before? Does the vehicle turn all the way to the ON position so that the Windows can defrost before going to the vehicle?

I'm pretty sure all vehicles without soft touch dash controls have to set it the night before

That's what I figured. Just need to know if the vehicle goes into full ON mode with the remote start. My wife's 2007 Tahoe would remote start but the damn thing didn't warm up. The A/C and seat heaters only turned on if the key physically turned the engine on.

Our trucks will just go to the last setting that it was on. That goes for the seat heater as well.

HA! my ex's Sierra would do the same thing, must be a GM thing. Make's remote start worthless if you ask me.

KBvoodoo seems to have a cheap remote start kit for people to use if that hasn't been mentioned in here yet.
Still has the issue of engine shut off as door is opened though. Let's you keep the factory fob though, which is a must for me.

Actually cars still need to warm up.... Try it out! Jump into your car, start it, and take off.... Then do the same thing but let the truck warm up this time (not for 30 seconds, but 2-3 minutes). You can see a huge difference in the way the transmission shifts. Also, there are certain cars such as the Mazda 8, that need to warm up for 5 minutes before you drive it. A lot of people don't know that, and I understand that its a completely different engine (Rotary), but I think its still important to let all the fluids get somewhat warm before you take off.

And yes, I am concerned about having to start the car twice to drive it once. Like you said, it "also puts wear on...the engine, the AC system, the lights, the alternator" so minimal wear on the truck is a plus for me...

Furthermore, what also sets me off, is that we are the wuss for not wanting to put additional wear and tear on our vehicles, but you don't want to carry around an extra key fob???? o_O

I was just at my Toyota dealer in town early this weeke to take a 2017 TRD Off-road for a spin. Planning on ordering on once VW Canada has given us details on when our TDI will be bought back here. I was actually asking about OEM remote starters and my sales person says they are actually available (finally). Showed me this video: https://youtu.be/lMAltbQjPfc

I'll definitely be getting this done on my Taco, whenever I get it (THANKS VW!).

I strongly suggest against buying the Toyota remote starts. Even with range extenders I see a mountain of complaints. Toyota needs to step it up and improve them greatly.

Are the complaints range related or just overall? I'd prefer OEM but am ok with aftermarket if need be.

Range and use confusion. The buttons are idiotic, and the range extender is massive.

I get a killer deal on OEM and installed a compustar in which I've had zero issues.

    Good to know. Thanks man.

I've had a Compustar unit on a previous car and never really had an issue with them.

Does anyone have the OEM "Start Plus" system? Wondering if it will keep the engine running during vehicle entry. That's the only thing holding me back from slapping in a aftermarket remote start.

If you're waiting for Toyota to do something different on PTS Tacomas, I expect you're going to be waiting a long time.

Like any profession, there are scumbags and there are good people. I've encountered lawyers of both sorts. When shit goes sideways it can be mighty handy to already know a good one.
