Accidentally posted this in the wheeling trips thread.

What's up guys? It's been a while since I dropped a line in this thread. Quick question:

Do you do oil changes more based on miles or time since last change? I still have 2,000 miles left until the next Oil change but it's been 4 months since the last change. Should I wait until I hit 5k and change or should I change it because it's been a while?

Mileage for me... i change my oil every 7500 even though its good for 10k time doesn't really break down oil in a 4 month period... I test my oil with a falling ball every oil change too to make sure viscosity didn't change and there are no foreign contaminants in it... but I have the tester at work so it didn't cost me anything

Regular oil breaks down over time, accelerated by use, full synthetic breaks down over use, accelerated by type of use. Light use can get up to 10k out of synthetic, hard use only gets about 5k, I usually take a fresh white paper towel for visual and rub between my fingers to estimate integrity.

Oil break down occurs over a much longer stretch of time than 4months though! Id say conventional oil is good for atleast a year to sit... at work we just bought a 55 gallon drum of 10w 30 Caterpillar oil and it was manufactured in november 2015

Unused oil is good for damn near forever in the container.
Put it in an engine where it is subject to thermal breakdown and contaminants, and it has a finite life. Extended oil change intervals do not alter this fact. Conventional oil is more susceptible to breakdown from the by products of combustion, but synthetics do suffer from the same issue to a lesser degree.
Even with synthetic I would not go longer 6 months between changes.
I am doing 10k intervals now on full synthetic, and have had my oil checked by a lab last two times. Everything was within spec.

Long time Tacoma owner but finally have an off road, and want to use it! No more mall crawling for me. I see you guys go to some sweet places, seen a few at frenchies pit, etc. Let me know next time you guys go for a trip, would love to put my new truck through the paces. Also would you guys recommend replacing the Goodyear stockers from the get go? They seem like they wouldn't hold up too well off road, wondering if investing in some Ko2s or Toyos would be worth it.

sweet Ill look into those. I hesitate with the ko2s cause they're E rated and heavy for the 99% of street driving I'll be doing.

Just saw that. So what are your guys thoughts on tires then. Truck is my DD, but I also want to take the occasional off road path/trail, hard to justify taking a huge hit on MPG for the occasional use, unless you guys think the E rated are worth it.

Get a second set of wheels. Off roading will scratch the wheels anyway. Though skids and sliders should be added first.

Cool always thought tires were first. Look into some sliders and skids.
