Right I too do not like the idea of doing that, but afe should have made it right the first time. There should have been larger flaps around the rubber plug to hold it in place and can easily be pulled out. Just like good ear plugs..

I agree 100% but i'm used to fixing what engineers screw up, it's kinda part of what I do for a living lol. What they should have done is made a plug with a lip on both sides, just like a wiring harness grommet. What do I know though, i'm not an engineer lol

I believe they were seeing how fast they can get it on the market. I also noticed the holes on the box did not line up for the screws holes on the truck.

The real reason I got this intake was for the future use of snorkel but that is further down the road. K&N did not sit up against the hole on the side it just uses the open box and the filters are not good at trapping thus sucking(pun) more dirt in than intended.

The factory box is perfectly suited for adding a snorkel to, probably better actually. Factory box is better sealed, only one hole in the fender well which would be perfect for adding a pipe to. No you've got a box with a poorly sealed top window, poorly sealed filter to air box gasket, poorly sealed hole on the front. Could have saved a bunch of money if that's all you were looking for.

I saw that, but when buying I did not realize all the unsealed things. But like I said that will be further down the road anyway and I still like the intake. Not sad at all. It only takes 30 min to switch anyway so that is not bad.

Agree there and I always save anything I remove which I assume you do too. Easy to switch back in the future if need be.

That is correct! Everything conveniently fits inside the box the intake came in.

I saw on the forum that an individual did put both TRD exhaust and intake on. I believe the title is TRD exhaust and intake. Not sure if he did a dyno or not to prove a gain.

The TRD intake is just a new lid that says TRD and a TRD drop in filter. Still uses the factory bottom, what's the point?

Does it have the cool thing on top that shows how much it sucks/ or when to change filter?
Looks like the idea came from a vacuum.

lol I don't think it has one of those. Drop a TRD panel filter into your stock housing, same difference and much cheaper.

I am trying to decide between the K&N 77 Series Air Intake (77-9039KP) and the Blackhawk Air Intake (71-9039) for my '16 Tacoma TRD Off-Road. I'll probably order one soon while the K&N rebate is going on and wait until the Spring to install.

Any suggestions? Any real differences for the truck except the filter (and tube) material and claimed HP gain between the two intakes?

    Thanks!

Both of them suck hot air in from under the hood. The stock intake is actually a better design in that respect. I have no experience with any intake on the Tacoma other than my AFE and I can say i'm happy with it. Fit is nice, looks good, I do wish they didn't have their logo on it but hey, can't fault them for that.

^ Truth. I had a K&N drop in and after time I looked more porous letting more pass by.

I also read they are louder than AFE.

That is the first I have seen of Airaid. Was there an individual, on the forums, who tested the intake? It could have been a different intake, but not sure...

Update: My AFE is still doing good and still no complaints. Averaging around 17.5 mpg(computer) cold morning and little warmer evening but same across the week.
