Manual trans grind after replacing oil/fluid

How many quarts of Redline MT90 should I need when draining and filling the transmission?

 

almost 2 or 2 qts.

 

I thought it was 3.15 quarts...I ordered a gallon of MT90 just to be safe.

Interesting...the manual it pulls up only shows automatic transmission, not the 6 speed

 

Every Owners manual I've every accessed thru that site had both manual/automatic info

I had the grind after buying the truck and were mentally already preparing to rebuild the transmission.

Tried the Redline oil first which didn't make a difference...

Than recently tried the Ford oil and that made a night and day difference.

I highly recommend it to anyone with a manual transmission.

 

From my experience in other cars, there is no magical fluid if the syncros are worn--it's merely a bandaid. Mine started feeling notchy and I can't figure out yet if it's the syncros or the clutch. I put in MT90 and it made a small difference in the notchiness but it seems like it doesn't want to come out of third gear about every 1 of 3 shifts.

 

Agreed, it is not a magical fix. But it made a huge difference. Still need to shift slow into third, but it is a lot better than before.

For the last several years with my little race prepped street car it's the only thing I'd use. Created a nice smooth shifting instead of having to wrestle with some of the gates in the middle of a run.

I had no internal damage, just needed a better product, not easy to find in a pure GL4.

No, it's not magical if there is existing damage. But as you've found, if there is minor wear/binding, it can make the difference between needing an immediate overhaul vs restoring driveability for a good while.

I've even seen some vehicles continue to improve for a few hundred miles. I suppose internal clean up from neglect and a fresh coating of a good lube were the contributing factors in those cases.

And if you are already in good shape, and it's just 'service time', why not use the good stuff?

 

I'll have to give the Ford stuff a try on the next oil change. I'll add I've been happy with MT90 but I can get the Ford oil at my local dealer.

 

Add some 'magic slippery' to you transmission, transfer case, and differentials. 'Magic slippery' = molybdenum disulfide - search on Amazon. Does wonders for sticky shifting and gear whine. Doesn't matter what gear oil you add it to.

 

Landphil is right,...Toyota is wrong,..period. Lucas oil WILL cause the sychro problem you describe. I know first hand. I have probably tried 6 or 8 different oils, and the ONLY one I use now is Redline MT-90. Using Mt-90, the shifting will recover over time unless you have done permanent damage. The whole GL4/GL5 thing only refers to non synchronized gear boxes, like differentials.

 

Synchros need a certain amount of friction to function. They need specially formulated oils. Putting any kind of additive in a Tacoma transfer case could cause catastrophic failure. There is an internal pump with a very fine filter screen that can get clogged easily with added crap.

 

After a quick search, it appears Amsoil makes a GL-4/manual trans specific gear oil.

Bit rich at $16 a quart but I run their Severe Gear gear oil in my Trans, TC, and f/r diffs and I'm satisfied. I'm curious to know if this particular oil would make a difference in the trans cause it's a bit...notchy.

I've tried it,...no it doesn't work so well in the tranny. There is only one oil for for these transmissions as far as I'm concerned, and it keeps being said...Redline MT-90

 

I just drained out the Redline MT90 from my 5sp after about 4000 miles. It was just fine in the warmer months but in the New England cold it takes a long time to get the trans warm and I'd have a stiff/crunchy, if not cautious, 2nd gear shift.

Ford xt-m5-qs. Which was a complete pain to type on an autocorrecting iPhone.

Observations:
The cold performance is certainly better than Redline MT90 in my truck. No questioning that, again in my truck. YMMV. No, it's not perfect. But, it shifts noticeably smoother into 2nd when dead cold and that's exactly what I hoped it would do after all I read after some thorough googling.
Added bonus: my trans seems to make less noise. Hard to measure something like that but it seems to be the case. I even had a teeny whine in 5th gear at highway speed which remarkably seems to be gone now. Call me a fan of the Ford fluid. I paid about $20/qt on Amazon a few months back and it sat on a shelf until Monday when I performed an oil change and trans fluid drain/fill.
