Warming up the engine

When it's -20 or lower I let it warm up for 10-15 minutes. I don't care about a little gas, and if you think you do I welcome you to sit in my cold truck at -40 then re evaluate

 

Modern engines aren't supposed to be warmed at idle. It isn't uncommon for manuals tof explicitly state "do not warm engine by idling."

Turning the truck on and letting it idle one or two minutes is fine, but 10, 15+ minutes? Not ideal.

 

TW world members aren't normal. They are special

Tacoma aren't normal automobiles. They are the Bugatti Chiron of the truck world. They need to be warmed up, for 30 minutes, coddled, loved, cared for, so that once you start driving you can hear the diff howl, the tranny shift incorrectly, and sensors cut out, leaving you stranded....

 

And where might you live?

Most people up north don't warm their vehicles up the vehicles sake, rather for their own sake

 

Not at all you actually do more harm than any good. Fuel injected engines done need warm up and you will heat the oil and circulate it better moving.

I love winter. I live in central Oregon and we have our cold months. I prefer my rig to be warm when I get in and drive to work in the am.

 

my aux heater broke in my car 2 years ago...doesn't heat up until I've been driving for about 30min...my commute is about 25 min. I've had to get used to the cold haha

 

By that logic keying my truck is fine for it since it doesn't say not to do it in the manual

 

Well I've been letting my car engine with remote start warm up for 10-15 minutes for the last 350k and it runs perfectly. Not letting an engine warm up when it's -20 to -40 out just seems rediculous. Everything works better warmed up.

But from what I've learned from this forum lately is there's no point in arguing your opinion (life experiences) as it doesn't get you very far

 

How about this? I'm in a little different situation because I live so close to work. Being only 1.2 miles from work, my truck doesn't even have time to get up to normal operating temperature before I am there and shutting it down. Is it bad to be constantly driving my truck below operating temp? I do ride a bicycle to work when its nice outside, but I guess maybe its time to start riding even on the cold days too? I guess it wouldn't be too bad, definitely would need to bundle up though and get my face covered. Anybody have any first hand experience with this or actual facts about what might be going on with my truck under these conditions?

Your vehicle idling warming up isn't bad for it it's not putting any strain on the motor.

And voodoo isn't making had over fist. its a cheap solution to a 350+ upgrade.

We've got close to 40" since Thursday......

 

I don't really let mine warm up, it's been -30 with the wind chill here lately. Park in garage at night but open parkade during the day. Just like any other Toyota truck I've owned they are louder, clanky and slugish for the first 10mins. In my old 1990 the seats would freeze hard, probably from all the old farts hiding in there. This third gen is nice due to heated seats! Put the gloves on and get on the road.

 

It comes down to it being a personal thing.

It works for me that is all I care about .

If I really had to I would jump in and leave and get to work before it came down off high idle or the thermostat even opens.

Talk about condensation in the oil

Nice to melt the ice off the windows scrapping gets old .
