Nice! I lived in one for almost a year in college. Was great.

 

Are optima batteries still worth it? I know Monte used to preach about yellowtops, but I remember them having a bit of a falling out as a brand and producing less than stellar products.

 

They are teetering between being a top shelf product and an over priced mid level product in my book. I haven't seen anyone really complain about the Red tops but the deep cycle Yellow and Blues are getting less than stellar reviews. I would go buy an Odyssey or a Northstar if you can spend the extra couple bucks. AGM batteries' whole schtick is high dependability and stability in harsh conditions and the ability to supply lots of amps in cold weather, seems there is a design flaw if the heavy duty batteries cannot muster that.

 

If $ is the primary criteria, you will not be happy with the more expensive AGM type batteries. For my needs, AGM types are worth it. But you will pay more for them. I have had red tops and yellow tops and now using dual northstars.

A yellow top is expensive compared to the traditional 'wet' lead/acid type batteries and an odyssey or northstar will be even more $ than a yellow top.

 

Yeah, even my group 34R Odyssey was in the neighborhood of $250. But it was worth it for the piece of mind over the Les Schwab flooded plate group 31 the truck came with.

 

Money is not really being considered, I have a prodeal with optima so they are considerably cheaper than retail and line up with what I have paid in the past for less than stellar batteries. The battery in the cruiser is smaller than it should be so I am considering putting the correct size. The taco should be good for another year.

 

Well, trailer house was better than expected. Put a down payment on it to lock it in. Moving it out after first of the year.

 

I have yellows in both rigs. Three total.

I'll be going Agm next to around. My yellows in Frank freeze, they are now, and Igors yellow died once this winter already due to cold tempts.

But otherwise they have served me well.

Don't bother with the red tops if you go optima though. They aren't deepcycle.

If you have a pro deal on them and they are cheap I don't see a problem.

I still sell Optimas and use them in all of my trucks. A lot of people started saying they were getting worse once they were bought out by Johnson Controls, who also owns Interstate Brands, but the facility and production have never changed, and neither have the batteries. Is that to say that others have come on the market to compete? Of course not. I've heard very good things about Odysseys from the same reputable sources as reviewing the Optima. I think a good product needs competition to keep from cornering the market and these competing batteries do just that.
