Well the next generation specifically being one is a hunch, but if you look at the increasing CAFE and EPA standards, especially by 2025, the writing is on the wall.

I was also talking to the shop foreman at the dealership and we got to talking about trucks, the new engine, manual transmissions and i voiced my same "hunch." He said to enjoy it while it lasts because from what he's seen and heard that "hunch" wasn't too far off.

It is known that Toyota is currently working on implementing a hybrid engine into their trucks. Whether it will be the sole engine offering is the big question......

I would be confident to predict that when the redesigned 2018 4-Runner is announced it will have the 3.5 with an 8-Speed transmission and the Tacoma will follow with the redesigned Tundra getting 8-speed automatics in 2019.

Can confirm. NEW 8-speed trans and improved 2.5L in the works. Engine is coming from Japan and is expected to improve efficiency and power by about 15-ish%. Focus for both new engine and trans is the new Camry. Expect trickle-down afterwards.

I can expect the same engine in the 4Runner tuned for more HP and Torque as well as the 8 speed transmission.

I forgot to predict that "Start -Stop" will roll out across all larger Toyota products just like the 2017 Highlander to improve fuel economy along with roll out of the 8-speed transmissions.

That is not the case with my Silverado with the 6.2 and 8spd- You don't even notice it at all under normal conditions, and when you stomp on it, it is no worse than any other automatic when it kicks down hard. In fact- less so with this truck.

The GM 8 spd tranny is a far, far better experience than the Toyota 6 spd. Not even in the same league.

LOL! My 8 speed transmission is the best auto I've ever driven. It unlocks the torque converter to pass, or if completely necessary will go to 7th. They are not that close that they shift down 3. Drive one before you blow smoke and look stupid.

The ford 10 speed can skip multiple gears on a downshift if needed.

I predict we will see the new 2.5 liter in the Tacoma at some point.

I'm also interested to see what they do with the Tundra.

I'm not sure the 2.5 will be in the Taco as it sounds more like a car/small SUV application. I think the Tundra could get a 5.7 or 4.6 Atkinson DS4.

well I guess you don't notice our 6 spd kicking down 2 gears.

    quoting you

the point is why do you need 10 spds if your constantly kicking down 3+ gears every time you hit a slight incline or even dip into the gas pedal.

a properly geared transmission like the old 5 spd was great. but alas its a way for manufacturers to meet café numbers.

I haven't driven a 3rd gen, nor do I want to. It's underpowered and outdated technology compared to what the big 3 has to offer. When my full size crew cab luxury truck with 430hp gets better gas mileage than a mid sized base model truck, that's pretty damn sad.

The 8-speed ZF in my X5 35D is amazing. The problem with the Tacoma automatic isn't about the number of gears but about an appalling lack of finesse in the software tuning. The 2016 owners were effectively beta testers with Toyota only working to resolve issues once the owner venom got unacceptable. The Highlander automatic is much better (6-speed and probably the new 8 as well) because Toyota knows buyers have choices and won't tolerate poor execution.

How do you know its under powered if you havent driven one? You own a GMC but you complain on Tacomaworld about a Tacoma you havent even driven or own?

    That is very well said.

Like I said the difference between the Tacoma vs the Colorado, and now my Silverado, is simply amazing. Toyota totally f-ked up.
