I already have a cushy federal job. I'm just posting these for those that are looking.

 

I know this is an old thread, sorry to bump it I guess, but I've been trying to get a fed job for over a year now and not so much as a phone call has come my way. I'm on Ch. 31 Voc Rehab through the VA right now and learning IT/Network Admin stuff and I can't even find an internship or work study position anywhere.

Not like I don't love my job right now, coz I do! Just wish it made the kinda money that IT could make me.

So how'd you land that Fed job? I supposedly qualify for so many different hiring preferences but I feel like just another face in the crowd these days. It's tough when you take of the uniform after 11 years. Suddenly, you're no one special. ....sorry, I always say that coz about a year before I got out I has having a casual conversation with a cashier as she rang me up and when I told her I was leaving the military she said, "Oh, well, welcome to being nobody special."

Yeah I'm on usajobs, Chart (navy site), a few DoD contractor sites, and still nuthin'. The whole VA thing I'm on was touted as some kinda inside connection thing to help me get fed employment. Hasn't exactly worked out that way. Good luck to everyone else I guess!

Edited to say: Yeah, I've been to avue to apply for some homeland security positions. Complicated site there.

 

Also if you dont mind working in a war zone try kbr, fluor, dyncorp, ITT, Black and Veach. Most are hiring right now. They all pay really good but you have to be gone for 4-6 month at a time

 

One key to a GS job, get in the door and move to something else later.

 

Very good point just get your foot in the door even if its cleaning the floors

 

One thing to make sure of is that your qualifications on your resume match the job description. Decisions about who qualifies are made by people who probably know nothing about the job. So they just go down the checklist and see if what you have matches what's required for the job.

Back when they just had paper applications, I took a class from a guy on how to get a government job. He said to mention everything possible. For example, he said, if you've used a screwdriver, wrenches and rachets, write that down in a list of tools. It sounds dumb but the more information you have on your on-line resume, the more likely you are to be matched.

 

Just came across this thought it is kinda funny. I'm a Govt. employee and I will tell this, the government uses resumix. Computer based program that scans your online resume and searches for key word an example for me Electronics Technician. Good key word Radio Frquency Transmitter, Bad key word RF Transmitter. They are also starting to get more strict with the education for certain jobs. Basically, electronics workers need a 2 year degree now. Yes tools you can use is good to show because eventually the hiring supervisor does see the resume. When the resume does fall on the lfence of being border line, a person does read it supposedly with that type of experiance. But, I don't this crap.
Oh Govt hiring process takes quite a bit of time to go through the process.

 

That's probably used as a filter to screen out irrelevant resumes. Someone will still look at it after it makes it through the filter. But that's good advice to get through the filter.

As for time, it took me about 4 months from when I submitted my information to when I actually started working and that was fast. I know one guy who waited about 1 year. I received an offer letter with no start date about two months after I submitted my information. About 1 month later they gave me a start date that was a month from then. I was kind of worried when I didn't get any start date indication from them after the offer letter. I called about two weeks after getting the letter and they said, "if you received the letter, then you have a job. You'll just have to wait for the start time."

Also, from what they tell me there is one personnel office responsible for hiring in the southwest region. A lot of work for one office.

 

The program I got into was for recent college graduates in the engineering, computer science or mathematics field. You had to be within one year of graduation (before or after) to apply. It wasn't open to any other candidates.

A lot of people I work with are hires from contractors as well as direct hires from the Navy (close knit group).
