Bed Bobbing - Anyone?

Ever since I saw my first Toyota with a bobbed bed, it was something I always to do if I ever got a Tacoma. I had an '85 4runner that i was very close to bobbing, but sold it before I could do it.

As I was talking some pics of a newly installed part, I noticed how long the bed over hang was and it got me thinking again...that sure would look good about a foot shorted.

So I fired up paint and bobbed mine. I doubt anyone has done it on a 3rd gen otherwise I'm sure there would be posts about it. I'd imagine the composite bed will throw a wrinkle into it. But nothing a little glue won't fix.

What do think? Ugly? Am I crazy (probably)?

Answer to your questions...yes and yes, lol. No, not really. I kind of like the shortened look, but the reason I went with the access cab was to get the longer bed. But, if I did any off-roading......

you asked for opinions - ugly. I think the access cab with standard bed looks pretty well proportioned already.

Why not use a bobbed bed from a Double Cab short box and shorten the wheelbase, too?

Spoon did it to his 2nd gen so I can tell you the composite bed doesn't matter.

It takes a great body man to make a finished product look OE, in terms of build quality. Is that what you do for a living?

That thread actually made me change my mind on bobbing mine. I think his, while very good, was a little too much bob and looked silly. The front of this truck is so long you have to leave a little overhang for it to look good.

Oh good to know. I've never actually looked into the inside of a bobbed bed (outside of metal ones).

I've bashed my receiver a few times. So it's partly that and partly the look.

Worst case I eff it up and have to get fiberglass sides.

 

For me, The only reason I would do it is if it became a dedicated rock crawler. Just my .02!

 

No. But I am fairly good and chopping up cars. In this case, I'd just get it close and then take it to my body person that has the patience to make it all smoothed out and look good.

 

I swear I recognize those mountains. Are you in Utah?
