    Too few to list.
That's definitely sludge. I've dealt with this on a used car purchase a while back. Took lots of time to clean it up. I've recently rebuilt a 22RE with almost 280k on it which saw nothing but dino oil and looks nothing like this. Even with just dino oil use, this much sludge doesn't accumulate with regular OCI. This one is from neglect.

Just for full disclosure on the OP and something he didn't mention, which leads me to believe the previous owners has a lot to do with what he is dealing with now. This is the OP's first posting on TW =>

"just bought my second yota truck this time 01 white tacoma pre-runner 2.7 auto 2wd with 275k miles, bought it fair condition dirty interior all tires gone down to wires shown with wheel locks but no key, driver side front hit the deer so has damaged, cracked windshield and messed up window n door handles i got it for $1500 but it has new head gasket"

Except he says he's owned it two years with 3k/3mo. intervals, or at least 8 changes. There is enough detergent in Castrol to have done a lot of cleanup over that time.

If it's totally residual after 8 changes, I'd have hated to see it before.

Yeah, my biggest worry would be having an oil port clogged that bad, with an engine literally starving for oil that long.

I just wonder how good a dino oil would clean sludge, as compared to a Mobil 1 full synthetic oil?

I would flush, but physically clean out as much as possible first.....before the flush. Then go with some M1 HM.

I'm curious, do you commute daily in this vehicle? Do you have cold winters?

I think short commutes where the engine doesn't get to warm up very well when it is cold outside will sludge your engine up faster than anything....

That sounds like someone's fix for an engine that was running hot at some point. You did say it toasted a head gasket at some point before you owed it, right? The question is....did running it hot trash the gasket or did the cracked gasket cause it to run hot? Hard to say.

If you did a 3k/6m OCs....even on cheap dino juice, there's no way this type of sludge could happen. This engine was clearly neglected, if not down right abused, long before you ever owned it.

The fact that is still running and that it made it to that kind of mileage is a testament to the RZ's ruggedness.....and some luck too

Holy shit, never seen sludge that bad. If it were me I would do a SeaFoam treatment in the oil, then change it again after 200-300 miles, Ill bet money your oil will look black again. scraping or wiping or spraying crap will only clean that one part. Imagine how bad the rest of the oil system might be gummed up if that pick up is that bad. Worth the cost of doing 2 oil changes back to back to have peace of mind IMO.

Probably implied....but if you do this, include oil filter changes with this as well. Would hate (or love) to see what that would look like with all that sludge loosened up.

What I'm saying is....all of this drama happened before you bought it. Someone ran it hard with minimal maintenance....i.e. sketchy OCs. Probably overheated it at some point, trashing the HG and pulled the thermostat to counter the hot running. Eventually it ran so poorly the HG had to be replaced....causing the engine to run cold without a thermostat....contributing to the sludge problem which was probably well under way before that anyhow.

Scrape as much of the sludge out as you can, flush it and throw in some M1 HM oil. Drive it until it dies permanently

I'll also add....depending on how bad the HG breach was and how long it was run like that....the oil and coolant probably became one. That can make the sludge issue worse.

I think there were many factors that lead to this sludge problem.

Does that seafoam treatment really works? Done it before in the gas tank not in the oil

there are videos on youtube where a guy does a test on a few different types of engines, shit really works. Ive done it on a lot of my cars and they always seem to run a bit smoother and better mpg by 1-3mpg. Makes a huge difference when you use it in the gas, oil and vacuum lines. Smokes like a bitch and will freak you out if your 1st time but its just the sludge and carbon burning off through the exhaust.

((( However, be careful and follow instructions, dont rev to the moon afterwards or you might break something.
