on-dash brake light problem!!??

Hey whats up? I got a 97 sr5 taco w/ a strange problem, recently while driving I noticed my parking brake light keeps coming on when I romp on the throttle, and everytime I make a right-handed turn. I have no idea what it could be I was leaning towards a short w/ the light or a pinch in the brake line caused when I turn... Do you happen to know the problem? Or has there been similar threads with alternatives I can try?

 

If it comes on intermittently, that seems like some sort of electrical problem. For me every once in a while the parking brake light stays on after it has been relased and I found if you just give it a little tug and then lubricate the line, it's fine.

 

Have you checked your brake fluid level ?

 

If it is not the fluid level, try adjusting the parking brake.

I had a similar problem on my 98. Occasionally, when I hit a bump the brake light would come on. There is a switch at the end of the shaft that the parking brake slides in. The parking brake was not adjusted right so the return spring underneath the truck did not have enough force to hold the parking brake against that switch when the brake was released. If I pushed the parking brake in just a little when the light was on, it would go off.

I adjusted the p-brake and lubed the spring and problem solved.

 

Yeah I have the same problem... exactly the same...

 

Same problem here, I figured it was a wiring issue so I've kinda been ignoring it. I'll have to try lubing the return spring and see what happens.

 

I had the same prob, it was not electrical for me, it was the washer at the retun spring holding everything up under that was not letting my cable release. For awhile I tried wd40 but it would just get gummed up. So I took out the washer and my cable releases with ease. no brake light anymore. My 98 had the same prob.

 

All my Yotas have been super sensitive to brake fluid level. If the fluid gets down by the low mark the check brakes light will come on.

 

Crawl under the truck and follow the E brake cable to the rear axel and spray the "arm" of the cable guide and move it back and forth. The reason the light keeps coming on is because of the lack of tension on the cable, which in turn doesn't keep enough pressure on the e brake handle pressure switch. That is why the light will go on and off.

I appreciate all the info guys!! thanks a lot I'm gonna try everything that damn lights annoying.. Any one know why my front lockers have trouble going from unlocked to locked? It's practically impossible at a certian point when trying to turn one side (If i remember correctly). I've taken both sides off and greased them up real nice and its still froze?

 

I have the same problem, I adjusted the e brake cable and checked the switch and the fluid and every thing is ok. The problem started when it got cold and does it when I take turns. I will try to lubricate the back brakes cable and see how that goes.

What I find usually causes that problem is the bell crank for the ebrake is binding on one or both sides. The cables are not out of adjustment, the shoes are held partially applied in the drum. If you tighten the cables to pull the handle back down the shoes are dragging. You can burn up a set of back brakes in a hurry doing this wrong.

The weather eventually gets inside the boot on the backing plate and they bind. They are easy enough to unbolt from inside the drum area so you can clean and lubricate them.

My truck did the same thing, the brake light going on and off. At first I thought the problem was the e-brake handle and spring being loose. Turns out the "arm" and cable guides under the bed of the truck were the culprit. Mine were seized up and were replaced under warranty. I would check this out first.
