Who will be AP's college football Player of the Year?

FILE - In this Dec. 3, 2016, file photo, Florida quarterback Austin Appleby (12) is sacked by Alabama defensive lineman Jonathan Allen (93) during the first half of the Southeastern Conference championship NCAA college football game, in Atlanta. The AP college football Player of the Year will be announced Tuesday, Dec. 13, 2016. Jonathan Allen, of Alabama, Lamar Jackson, of Louisville, and Deshaun Watson, of Clemson, are the top three vote-getters. (AP Photo/Butch Dill, File)
The Associated Press has been handing out a college football player of the year award since 1998. Five times the AP's award has gone to a player other than the Heisman Trophy winner, including last year when Stanford's Christian McCaffrey beat out Alabama's Derrick Henry.

In the past the AP has asked its college football poll voters to cast a vote for one player it determines to be the best in college football. This season the AP used a Heisman-style system, asking voters to cast a ballot with a top three in order. First-place votes receive three points, two points for second and one for third. The winner is the player who receives the most points.

The AP player of the year will be announced Tuesday. Here are the top three vote-getters in alphabetical order:

    Jonathan Allen, DL, Alabama

Allen has 56 tackles, 8.5 sacks, 15 quarterback hurries and returned two fumbles for touchdowns. He won the Bronco Nagurski Award given to the nation's top defensive player. The 293-pound junior has been a dominant player on the nation's best defense for the No. 1 team in the country. Alabama leads the country in total defense, scoring defense and rush defense. The defending national champions will play No. 4 Washington in College Football Playoff semifinal at the Peach Bowl.

    Lamar Jackson, QB, Louisville

The Heisman Trophy winner has run for 21 touchdowns, thrown 30 TD passes and is averaging 410 total yards per game. He threw for 3,390 yards, and ran for 1,538 yards and 6.6 per carry. Jackson led the 15th-ranked Cardinals to a 9-3 season and an invitation to the Citrus Bowl to play No. 19 LSU.

    Deshaun Watson, QB, Clemson

The Heisman runner-up and Davey O'Brien Award winner as the nation's top quarterback led the Tigers to the College Football Playoff for the second straight season. The junior passed for 3,914 yards and 37 touchdowns and run for 529 and six touchdowns. No. 3 Clemson will face No. 2 Ohio State in the College Football Playoff semifinal at the Fiesta Bowl.

Malik Henry to transfer from FSU. Not surprised, but thought he would have at least competed in spring for the starting spot. Jimbo has always held fair competition and gave it to the most deserving (Francois this year). He hasn't announced where he is going, but he's from LA so would guess a west coast team.

These kids are getting big heads though, if they're not starting in their Freshman year, they're leaving.

I also consider that these kids are getting humbled, to a point. They come in, knowing they are going to have to compete, and when they don't get the starting gig, they get knocked down a few pegs, and decide to go somewhere else. It can be difficult, if not impossible to knock out a starter barring injury or arrest.

That can be true to an extent. Can't blame them too much as they're just trying to take the most advantage of their time in school to showcase their talents and grow and become a pro, but I feel like this is a more recent phenomenon to transfer away after 1 season at a school when they don't get their way though

In this instance though he never competed for the job, Jimbo redshirted him (which I heard he was mad about) and now has left without even trying to get that starting spot.

Looks like the Gators will be looking for a new DC:
Florida defensive coordinator Geoff Collins will be named Temple's coach, sources told ESPN.

Collins replaces Matt Rhule, who was hired at Baylor after four seasons with the Owls.

Its tough. Going from a big fish in a small pond, to a medium sized fish in an ocean. So, when there is a chance to be a starter somewhere else, they almost have to take it. They want to play, not watch someone else play. I get it. And honestly, this phenomenon is a product of CFB being a business, now the players are treating it as such. Trust me, it SUCKED watching Blake Barnett leave. He has a TON of potential and talent. While Jalen Hurts is also talented, I fear that he is honestly a product of the system. I really haven't seen any "WOW" moments. He is simply a freshman that has benefited from Lane Kiffin's protective play calling. Yes, he's extended a few plays with his feet....but he's also thrown something like 9 INT's and fumbles the ball regularly.

I kinda see why Barnett left when he did. They picked Hurts because he could run a bit better, and that fits Kiffin's play calling. Barnett is a pocket passer first, and has a bit of speed and agility to extend plays. Kiffin's play calling doesn't suit that type of QB as well.

    This.

I know they're all just trying to make the best decision for themselves, same as why you leave after 3 years if you're good enough.

And I'm not even bummed about Malik Henry leaving FSU, I was excited when we got his commitment and it affects our depth a little, but he had some offseason trouble already (breaking team rules) and had a weird time in the middle of the season where he wasn't on the field making people comment that something behind the scenes must be going on.

Yeah, if they could just keep it professional when they are leaving or not happy, people wouldn't care as much. Blake Barnett left in the middle of the season and the media and fans TORCHED him. But, he wasn't happy watching Jalen Hurts throw INTS and fumble. I get it. He wants to play, and get to the NFL. Why stick around? Also, he stated when he committed that he expected to start by his sophomore year (RS FRESH) and if that didn't happen he would be inclined to transfer. Should he have stuck around for the rest of the season? Maybe...but maybe Jalen Hurts just was THAT dominant and it was obvious the depth chart was stacked with 4 and 5 star QB's (which it is, and now another 4/5 star commit). So...I dunno.

I can't blame him for leaving in the middle of the season. 4/5 star qbs are recruited almost as heavily as coaches when schools have a vacancy. The sooner teams know he's available, the sooner he can get offered by another school.

I don't know that I can blame him either. I'm sure Kiffin was already chatting with other options even before one of his players put in for transfer. Whats the difference?

Its a business now. For all involved.
