I think it is safe to say that there IS a limit to what you can put on 7 inch wheels and that 8 inch wheels can handle more :) I am sure that manufacturers have some sort of design margin built in, but I personally would not go wider than spec as I tend not to push the limits on things like this. If I felt I needed something wider than 265 I would get wider wheels.

I am not much for anecdotal evidence of successfully going beyond manufacturers recommendations, i.e. "my 2 buddies run X tires on Y rims and it works fine." The setup may have a an 80% failure rate and your 2 buddies are not a large enough sample size to indicate that it is OK. Your 20 buddies could have no problems and the setup might still have 50% failure rate. If you have 1000 examples of success with a particular tire and a particular setup under varying conditions then we start to get into more confidence. My "feeling" based on manufacturers being conservative and lots of examples is that 285s are probably OK, but I don't do probably with regards to tires. Others may have different criteria or perhaps better data than I do.

Wait so if you don't feel that it is overly safe to exceed the manufacturers recommendation why did you ask about it initially?

Then what is the purpose of this thread? Go look up the tire and rim recommendations, problem solved..

Afterall we are random strangers with nothing to offer but anecdotes. If you don't want them go to the manufacturers.

First, one can upgrade tires to more aggressive off road tires without changing tire size. One can also do a small lift and maintain stock size without it looking too bad. Second, my stock tires are 245/75/16s so I can put on larger tires without exceeding manufacturers warranty. Third, the point of the original post was showing love for the stock rims as so many seem to dump them almost automatically (black rims are all the rage). The discussion of max tire size for the rims was brought up by someone else.

Ya but that would exceed Toyotas recommendation. Can't do that.

No one mentioned max tire size, they mentioned a capable tire size.

Again what is the point of your post? You seem to have the answer already based on your follow up posts so what exactly are you asking?

THe purpose of this thread was NOT to discuss max tire size on stock wheels (read the original post) It was to show some love to stock rims which people seem to automatically discard when they get new tires in favor of the "in vogue" blacked out wheels. Lets see some more pictures of non-stock tires on stock wheels.

No one ever mentioned max tire size. Perhaps you really need to rewrite your original post. Your original post comes off more like a question than a "show some love"

Yep, people really get into this on the motorcycle forums...I am the type that gears up to stay safe but it is sort of hard to point fingers at people who don't when I'm ridding a friggin motorcycle to work in rush hour traffic in the first place. :)

On my 2017 Tacoma TRD sport LB 4x4, it has 17" rims, planning on doing a 3" lift, what's a common larger size tire that I can fit using the stock rims without any rubbing?

Seriously? No one ever mentioned tire size? read the FIRST POST after the OP."2 things to keep in mind. stock wheels are 7" width which can limit you on tire sizes.... "

Well...sad to say but I can no longer stand following my own thread. Why do people have to look for reasons to start arguments?

I'll post some pics of mine this weekend. Im putting on OME 886 and dakar leaf pack. And, it will have stock trd sport rims with 265/70/17 cooper stt pros. I'm not worried about the rim width in the slightest.

You both are not getting what the OP wanted, he wanted to see pictures of stock wheels on upgraded tires with a small lift/level. Instead you two want to rant over something one of you brought up! Like one of you said, go back and read the original post.Tacoma new tires 1.jpg265x75x16 tires on SR dark alloy wheels.
