I would like to tell a story about my life. I don't have a lot of ink in my pen so I'll try to keep it short. I'm not quite sure where to begin but my parents divorced when I was ten and I guess that's when things just went and changed. Let's start with my dad. He was a loving dad, gave me all I ever had, taught me how to think and taught me how to drink. Now my Mom, she loved me too but she always had better things to do, doing dope and snorting coke while your kids just hope you come back home tonight. Now while this lasted the first few years after the divorce finally shit leveled out and we got back to near normal. And that's the end of my little ditty. My middle school years were spent at Port Neches Middle School. I made a lot of good friends and learned a lot there. After middle school I moved back with my dad and ended up going to high school in Port Arthur. While I learned books in Port Neches I was learning streets in Port Arthur. I didn't hang out with role models. We would smoke dope and drink 40's on the way to school at 7:30 in the morning. I would then go to class and be the best student in the fucking room, these are the people I'm up against. With the bar set so low I actually gave up and just went and got my GED, there was nothing at that school for me but trouble. So I quit school and went to work with my friends mooring ships, what a fucked up job that was. Let me just say that a ship doesn't just fall out of the sky and need to be secured to the dock. Our dispatcher would give thirty minutes warning no matter what time; day, night, morning, it was the same shit, he knew three hours before that. It sucked and didn't pay the bills. I decided that I would go to college and become an operator.

Story is not done, it's extremely rough. But is the truth. I'm not an operator, didn't follow through with that. Just wondering if this might be interesting to follow through with the story of me. I realize I'm not special but I may have a "special" story to tell in my own special way.

Go ahead bud, there are great people here that read, understand and help. It seems like you had rough time, and you are allowed to talk about it here. If it makes you feel better to write it down, do it :)

I'm doing great now, I'm just thinking of the folks that might be in or coming from that place can have something to look forward to. The stuff I went through lasted from about 10 years old to 25, I'm 37 now and I'm here to tell you things will get better.

Your not the only one that grew up that way. And it sounds as if you overcame it. I also hope you found a job your content with. And I agree with kemosabee. If it helps write it down if you need more than that there's definitely someone near you to talk to. Be cool and enjoy your day. Trust me it could be worse.

I'm not really trying to cope, yes I have a career I'm extremely happy with. I was just thinking of other people that think they're fucked up, I've got them beat. I've only touched on my late teens here. We all do things we aren't proud of but its how we recover that defines us. Since I have started at the FD I've been wanting to wright a story of shit that I've been through, not jus middle and high school but all I've been through getting and staying in my career. I guess I'm just testing it out here.

I don't know exactly what your story is but there is a great Thread on people suffering with Anxiety and Depression, you might want to chime into that one if it applies.

I was brought up in a Great family and still nearly screwed my life up when I was young. I have no one to blame.

I only have myself to blame for every mistake I have ever made. I give everyone around me the credit for believing in me enough to make me who I am now.

Thank you for sharing. Growing up can be tough. I'm sure we can all relate in some form or another. As the saying goes, it doesn't matter where or how you started, it only matters how and where you finish. Seems like you're doing great now! What doesn't kill ya makes you stronger ;) God Bless. Sub'd

Well let's see, I went to college a few times. The first time lasted about two weeks, I quit just before the deadline of getting my dads money back. I took that money and went on to party for about a week straight. After that I started a job delivering beer, that was like an alcoholic getting a job delivering beer. I did this about a year before realizing it wasn't what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. I was riding the beer truck the morning of 9-11-2001 and it had a real impact on me. I enrolled in the next available fire academy. Once I finished that I went to work on the ambulance while aplying at fire departments. I completed the interview process in a few cities but wasn't hired, I really wanted to work in my home town anyway. I interviewed in my hometown and things went well but there was one guy ahead of me, a good friend of mine, he got the job and I waited. I ended up getting a DWI a month before they came knocking on my door, no job for me. After that I worked a few sales jobs and did ok but it wasn't for me. I went back and finished a few semesters of college as a high school drop out on the deans list but never found my passion. About eight years passed and I started testing again for the fire department. I scored first on their list three times before they started taking me serious again.

During the time posted prior I had gotten married and had kids so that lit a real fire under my ass, I knew I had to do something for my family. My wife has always been real supportive of me, we started off in a two bedroom home 900 square feet owned by my dad with my two boys and a stepdaughter. She never really complained but always encouraged me to do what I was passionate about. After my third interview at the FD and scoring at the top on their test the chief told me he would hire me if I certify myself, at this time they would pay for and send potential employees through the academy but with my past the state wouldn't guarantee my certification. At this point I had nothing to lose I went back through the fire academy for the second time and owned that bitch, I was 31 years old at the time and in class with 15 20-25 year olds and earned outstanding cadet and outstanding academic awards. I graduated the academy 12-10 and was hired 3-11. My mom and dad have been there for me every step of my adult life. Even though things were fucked in the beginning they were able to work through their things as well. My dad has been the most influential person in my life. Parents, it turns out, are just as human as you are.

Thanks for sharing your story man and congrats on the job. I've witnessed people turn their lives around and I've also seen people completely destroy themselves and their families by making bad choices. Everyday is a new day and an opportunity to correct past mistakes and help others as well. The most influential person in your story is that dispatcher who you worked for. He sounds like a jerk but his actions made you aim for a better career and maybe helped you dig a little deeper and believe that you could do better. If not for that dispatcher your life may have been completely different. Thanks again for sharing.
