Alright Experts....Yesterday morning, I drove to work and both headlights were functioning fine. Yesterday evening on the drive home, only fogs and DRL's were working. High beams are fine...but cannot get the lows to kick on. I have done and HID conversion kit about 6 months ago and they have worked flawless ever since.

To ensure it wasn't the HID's, i disconnected them and input the OEM H11 bulb and it still would not kick on.

Could this be a fuse issue? Could it be wiring? Regardless of what it is, Toyota is stating that warranty is voided and they will need to run a $55 diagnostic. IMO, i don't see how HID's can cause any issues to kill out BOTH headlights at the same exact time.....

Any guidance would be great....sitting in the toyota lobby now!!!

Why is the warranty voided? Because you put in the HID kit?

Weren't other people that did the HID/LED conversion experiencing this as well?

At any rate, you're going to get screwed on the warranty when you've modified what ends up being problematic

Has to be. They aren't going to honor a warranty on a modified part or something that breaks because of a modified part

Thats what I figured, but just double checking. I keep reading about folks screwing shit up by changing the lights, just keeps me from wanting to do it.

Me too. I was considering upgrading the lights until I heard about all the issues. Just got a Prinsu rack and a 40" light bar instead

Just the fact that you went to HID they are probably billing you to diagnose. Not sure if you are aware, but they are starting to crack down on the dealers about busting people with inspections if their HIDs arnt from the factory causing some to fail a good inspection. What HID kit did you put in your truck and did you try plugging in a stock halogen bulb into the factory electrical harness? That would tell a lot of what component is having the issue.

And to the OP, if the problem they find isn't because of the HID kit, they'll refund you the diagnostic and bill Toyota

I did plug in the stock halogen bulb to the wiring and still didn't get anything. Was never aware that an aftermarket kit could trigger such issues on headlights. They have worked flawlessly the past 6 months.

I probably would have replaced the aftermarket bulbs with the stock bulbs before taking it back...

So probably best to go ahead and pay for the diagnostic to determine what it is? I am going to be pissed if i pay $55 for a diagnostic and the $.70 fuse is blown....

Unfortunately that's what it's going to boil down to. Like I said previously if it is determined to be something that wasn't caused by the aftermarket bulbs you won't have to pay the diagnostic.

We take risks when we modify our trucks. I have lots of aftermarket parts too

The low/high beams have each their own fuse under the hood.

If the HID kit damaged the BCM then the stock bulbs would not light either. Same has happened with interior LED's damaging the BCM. stick with halogen as that is what the truck is designed for IMO.

My question is how can such an easy swap/mod cause so much chaos to the truck? To me it just doesn't make sense...Are the modern vehicles today so high tech with computer systems it sense changes and just breaks if its not stock...

Blown low beam fuse or fried the low beam wiring circuit.

Honestly I doubt there are that many connections you would have to undo in order to deactivate your HIDs. My HIDs are morimotos, but all I have to do is remove the connectors from the electrical wiring harnesses for the most part besides a random clip. Shouldn't matter if your HID wiring harness has power independently from the battery as long as the ballasts arnt plugged into your existing wiring harness at all. I would be very surprised though if it was something to do with your stock wiring. Also is it hard in a third gen to get access to the fuse box? Sometimes the knock off HID kits can have temperamental wiring in their ballasts and short out pretty quick as well.

I know one time I had a short in a tail light on my older taco, my pops was so adamant that Toyota could fix it that he insisted that he would pay and wouldn't shut up about it. Got a $240 bill for the work and they said they replaced the bulb which failed after the truck was on due to a short...I ended up just getting a new tail light online and swapped it in two min without issue. Mods can make new problems with vehicles which either we end up diagnosing ourselves or paying the bill unfortunately.
