No ideas, but some things to think about:
-If someone breaks in and wants your shit bad enough, they're going to get it. It's your job to make the job more difficult so they reconsider. Obviously something I can pick up and carry is easier than something big, heavy and bolted to the ground. There are also youtube videos where big 'ol safes are defeated with a cheap harbor freight angle grinder cutting into the side of the safe wehre the metal is usually thinner (as opposed to the door and locking mechanism)
-If someone breaks in and you need your shit, make sure you can get into it quickly. Think of it the same way as practicing drawing from the holster.
-Don't get hung up on fire ratings. The fire ratings usually refer to the combustion of paper. What they do not take into consideration is the cooking of your ammo in the safe. Essentially during a full blown house fire, safes become ovens so any live ammo could cook and explode, not to mention melting any polymer parts you may have. All this without a single flame touching anything inside. Or don't keep ammo in the safe? :notsure:

Dunno. Just some things to think about.

I recently found all that out because I'm in the market too. Might end up buying two- medium one for handguns and paperwork, etc., and one just for rifles. My place is tiny and space is at a premium. I'd rather keep them in the house than have my safe(s) in the detached garage.

If the fire rating is high enough, you don't have to worry about ammo and polymer parts. I was at the NRA convention and talked to every gun safe manufacture there. Some describe fire rating a little different than other. Mainly, when it comes to paper, it discolors beyond usability and a very low temp. So even though a safe if fire rated and your papers don't burn, you might still not be able to use them, same with photos. Now, some of the bigger companies, that will go into greater detail and will stand behind their fire rating, will stand up to saving papers, photos, ammo and anything else you put in there. Ever couple of years, we have a forest fire that destroyed communities, every time the news always finds a house where only the gun safe and brick chimney are left standing. I know of two personally, one had a $$$ safe and everything inside was untouched and the other had a $$, his papers were mostly damaged, photos destroyed, but ammo and guns were all fine.

So, when it comes to gun safes, you have to ask yourself what it is you want it to do. Hold guns and ammo, then a less expensive one is fine. Act as a safe deposit box and protect important papers, photos, and hard drives, then you need to look into the fire ratings and really spend the money.

Safes and alarms keep the crack heads and basic thieves at bay. However, if a profession wants it, nothing short of an armed guard is going to stop them.

For quick access, they make some cool biometric hand gun cases that are designed to be bolted to your bed or night stand (they even make some cool nightstand safes). That can give you quick access to a firearm while keeping it locked up from kids and run of the mill thieves.

Not trying to argue with you, just giving a different opinion.

I would also add that your current living situation should be part of the safe discussion. If you rent or plan to move in the next few years, a smaller, lighter safe would be a better option. Something you or a moving company can move. If you own and don't plan to move anywhere anytime soon, the bigger heavier ones is something to consider. A lot of the better safe companies offer installation with purchase and relocation (with a fee) when the time comes to move. They have special equipment and knowledge on how to do it.

By all means, I appreciate your opinion. Like I said, I'm still learning and by no means am a safe expert. Barely in the market for my second safe. First one was purchased many, many years ago before I even had firearms or knew a damn thing about fire ratings. Back then a safe was a big, heavy box to lock your stuff in as far as I was concerned. Gave it to my father for his paperwork. Just like everything, there are manufacturers out there that will put out and outstanding product that has been tested and rated and will stand by it if you ever have any issues, and then there is everyone else that will sell you something and whatever happens to it is your problem after that. The price will be reflected in both. Scott asked for ideas/opinions so I think it's important for him and everyone else here to hear as many views as they can so they can make informed decisions when buying their own safes. That's really what the internet is supposed to be- a platform for sharing ideas. Not some dick swinging competition.

    Well, I hear there's porn too...:anonymous:

Best deals will be in Atlanta April 27th - 30th at the NRA Convention. Not too far from you and if you have never been, it is worth your time.
