I have a 2009 4x4 v6 4.0. just had the engine rebuilt about 2/3 months ago. Truck has been running great ever since. No issues. Just the other day, it started driving rough and wouldn't pass 45mph. I pulled over, turned it off and back on, started driving again. Check engine light turned off for a sec then again, it started with the rough ride and check engine light flashing. No overheating, no nothing. I drove about 20 miles home not being able to get it pass 45mph.
So, I got it home, turned it off for a bit. turned it back on after 30 mins, a cloud of white smoke, a little bit of water but not much. Condensation maybe but doesn't stop.
Checked the oil, no water. checked the radiator, still full. Connected the computer, cylinder 5 misfire. Pull out the plug, still has oil on it, also hugh gap. .65 almost. Tried cranking with the plug out attached to the boot still, no spark. Changed the plug just in case of the gap but still nothing.

This is where I'm at. Spoke to the mechanic who rebuilt the engine, he's out of town till the 4th of January.

    Any advice? any ideas? anything?

    Thanks in advance.

Did you close the gap on the plug?

How many miles on the plugs?

How many miles on the truck?

Have you inspected any of the other plugs?

So you're saying that you, for example, took the coil pack from #3 cylinder, unplugged it, then plugged it into cylinder #5 connector, put the spark plug in, and cranked or tried starting but still had the misfire?

Did you swap the spark plugs between cylinder number 5 and any other cylinder?

Remove spark plug from cylinder 5 and swap it with the spark plug from any other cylinder.

Or just replace all of the spark plugs.

I'm curious about the engine rebuid, i've heard the 1GR-FE has Microfilm coated Cylinders, did the shop bore and re-coat the cyls?

For low friction and lower oil consumption, my 01 CBR has Nikasil plated cylinders. it can be bored but it costs an arm and a leg to replate.

 And to reduce the cost of adding in iron sleeves into an aluminum block.

    Correct.
I first tried with the old plug by just switch the coil pack before checking the plug. Then checked the plug and replaced it with new one. I did not switch any plug. just replaced #5

I switch the coil pack but what I meant was I can't change the plug that goes to the coil pack. I believe that's not sending a signal. but wouldn't I have a different code, a computer faill? I can't swap that cause of firing order.

    1. Swap out your plugs, make sure they are Denso.

    2. If the issue is still there, play around w the coilpacks switch them around

    3. If you still have a problem, check your fuel injectors - have them cleaned.

As it seems, there is a potential coil wire problem. Since you swapped coil packs.

However. Being that you live in Florida and it gets relatively hot, there is a chance you might also have a vacuum leak contributing to the misfire.

Check all of your hoses. Especially the driver side pcv hose. From intake manifold to valve cover. Look for any cracks or splits. Spray around the engine bay with brake clean, silicone, carb cleaner, etc. Listen for idle changes.

Then, we'll talk about your fuel filter, once this problem is solved.

I would suggest taking a look at the number 5 plug as well as the 4 and 6. You saw white smoke. You have a misfire code. It's running like crap. If number 5 has a really clean spark plug you probably have a blown head gasket. Cylinder 6 was pretty common for misfires on early 4.0's due to the old head gasket design. Happened to mine.
