2001 tacoma supercharger UNinstall?

Tell me about it. My little gem was so nice. custom suspension (nissan springs in the back), embroidered "turbo" bucket seats, tilt meter on the dash. It had every option that was available on an '86.

Pretty sure the block was bad. Overheating, and there was coolant in the cylinders (was hoping it was a head gasket so I opened her up).

I wanted to keep it and swap in a 3.4L or something, but my wife had since named the thing "Christine" even though it actually only stranded us at the slopes once, when my clutch master cylinder blew. But I guess once is all it takes, lol...

She said if I got rid of it I could get a dirtbike. Within 24 hours, I was loading my new dirtbike into my taco.

 

Yea shoulda kept it. New block is cheap and easy to find for 22res.

 

Does it really need different fuel?

Since it increases compression, the engine won't last as long in theory. Someone should take a survey of high mileage tacos and see how many are supercharged...

 

5vzfe is built like a tank. I have a friend that boosted his at 186k. Has over 250k now. zero issues.

the trd blower doesn't put THAT much stress on it.

and yes. You need to run 91 in ALL boosted vehicles.

 

How bad pinging are we talking about? Does it ping under load anytime you start to see boost?

I have pretty bad pinging with mine too, but it really only does it if I'm pushing 4 - 5+ lbs of boost. Then it gets pretty bad as well, but there are times when it doesn't. Going to do the 7th someday, but it's not so bad that I would take it off.

It was a lot worse when I first got my truck, and it turned out there was a vacuum leak on the supercharger from an uncapped port on the back (where the EGR hose plugs in if you have an applicable truck). After we got that figured out and capped it, the pinging got much better.

 

@TakeMeToTheTacoShop is your truck throwing any codes? The uncapped port/vacuum leak caused a P0171 on mine.

 

I didn't know that, naturally aspirated here. 250k is childs play, there are people on here with 450-500. I would still like to see someone do a survey on the super high mileages to see how many are supercharged, would be very interesting.

 

There's a guy on here with a 500k 3.4l supercharged reg cab tacoma, I forget his username though. He always pops into these supercharger threads so I'm sure we'll see him soon, he's got a sick truck.

 

And yeah you definitely want to run no less than 91 octane with boost, I can tell a big difference if I run 91 from a crappy no-name gas station versus someplace like 76 or Shell.

 

My set up cost ~$2500. That was fabricating the plumbing myself. Could probably do it a little cheaper if it was non-intercooled and internally gated.

I had the same type of pining issue on my old S/C 5vz too with the urd 2.2 and the 7th inj kit

I've got the whole stock intake manifold you would need to replace the supercharger for sale if your interested, not to far away from you either. Let me know

 

It will do it without fail when I'm accelerating pretty good and it shifts to 3rd or overdrive. I have to always drive with overdrive off so that my rpm's stay up closer to 3K, as soon as it shifts and I'm closer to 2K while the blower is working it pings.

As far as the code I had the P0171 code a while back but I cleaned the MAF sensor and it hasn't come back. Thank's for the heads up though, It's worth taking a look at for sure.

I'm looking at these gasket sets for the Intake Manifold - Upper, and they range from $25-$100 do you guys have any experience or advice on buying gasket sets like these? Do you get what you pay for? So far Theres Apex for $25, Beck Arnley for $50, and Fel-Pro for $100.

 

The conversion back to stock was a success, was able to do it with minimal hiccups. And now I can drive without ping! Thanks @Jimmynolife for letting my buy that intake.

I was wondering if anyone has an extra stock throttle cable bracket for an automatic 3.4l laying around?

The stock intake kit I got was missing that part so we had to fabricate a make shift one using the bracket from the supercharger. My solution is temporary and someone from the forum wants to buy the supercharger I took off and it would be nice to give him that bracket I had to use. Any help would be much appreciated! I can't seem to find a place to just buy that bracket.
