    My dad explained that insurance companies are the most successful gambling institutions. They are betting that you won't get in an accident, get injured, get sick, etc. And since they win that bet every month, you pay up. But if you win the bet (God forbid) and get injured, they pay up.

    Its "shared risk". Hence why when you get a ticket or do something that makes you seem more risky, they jack your rates up.

    They are taking the risk that you wont get hurt, or cause injury or damage.

    You're paying them, so that if you do, you aren't on the hook for potentially millions of dollars.
