I was just giving an example, you're more likely to use 4lo on the beach than on the street in the snow are you not?

4hi you could use both street and off, but 4lo wouldn't make much sense.

Where i go offroading on the beach there is a set speed limit, I don't think you could go over 10 or 15mph.

I have crawl control on my 4Runner. I'll have to try it out soon

I 4Hi'd my OR into a 24" snowbank that had "set up" the other evening. The truck started to bounce. I put it in 4Lo MTS Mogul and it crawled out without hesitating.

Last week I tried to back uphill to an elk in 4" of slick-based snow and I spun out in 4Hi. It was steep. It wasn't a good place to be with big rocks below me. Put it in 4Lo MTS Rock and Sand and again it didn't hesitate. Why Rock and Sand? Dunno but it worked.

Rock and sand or Mud and Sand? My 2017 owners manual on pg 258 stays MTS :Mud and Sand Road conditions "Suitable for muddy roads, sandy roads, snow-covered roads, dirt trails and other slippery or dirty conditions" Which is probably why it worked so well.

It must have been Mud and Sand. And I'm thinking you and I are the only two here that use the manual.

    As it says:

When it is difficult to generate traction“MUD & SAND” mode provides the largest amount of tire slippage, followed

by “LOOSE ROCK”, “MOGUL”, “ROCK & DIRT” and “ROCK” mode.

If the current tires slip is too large, driveability can be improved by selecting a mode with a smaller slip amount. Conversely, selecting a mode with a larger slip can improve driveability, if the current tire slip is too small.

Just put the truck in 4high and you'll be fine in the snow. I never used 4 low in the snow. I live in NYC and never had a problem using 4 high in the snow. This will be my first winter using stock tires on a truck.

I wasn't "fine" in the snow situations I mentioned above. I was in a steep-tight spot in the second one and headed in that direction in the first one. 24" of piled snow that has hard set isn't a friendly place to be in 4Hi.

General snow driving? I agree 4Hi is fine.

Its getting bad, Im almost broke.
I use 4 lo in the snow for the sole reason of having the rear locker going. That alone makes a huge difference. More than likely what gets you unstuck in snow.

Crawl control does not work as you would expect. Just use 4lo, lock rear and you will be better off.

I guess "snow" driving should be divided to on road and off road , on road you're not likely to use 4LO unless you're in the ditch or otherwise off road

I pull my trailer with snowmobile up a steep canyon. Its hard to pull the trailer up and many trucks slide down backwards with their trailers. I throw it in 4lo with the locker and give it hell, i want speed so the crawl control is worthless to me. So far i havent gotten stuck. The locker is awesome. Aside from that i run it in 4 high on any city roads that are snow packed.

No. Just freezing rain on the snow. I was sliding around using the pedal. Crawl helps to quickly fixes slipping of the rear. Just testing it out

Cool , I was just wondering because I know videos tend to flatten out inclines , it just didn't look steep enough to be a big problem if you weren't on a really slick surface

Seems like crawl control is a lot like that age-old trick..... feather the gas and maintain some level of friction instead of just spinning out and losing all friction. Stuck and throwing 4 rooster tails in the snow in 4high doesn't mean that you could just put it in 4Lo and go easy on the gas. It's like saying you need an electric knife to carve a turkey, because every time you use a dull butter knife you fuck it up.

I want to see someone actually get stuck in 4Low, actually trying to get unstuck going easy on the throttle, then after failing, get rescued by crawl mode.

Crawl control is literally for crawling speeds. Multi-terrain mode is for normal speeds with low traction even when in 4Lo.

The dial lets you control the aggressiveness of crawl. The higher the setting, the less crawl control steps in also allowing you to move at a faster pace. If you set it to the lowest setting crawl control will slow you down to the slowest speed possible.

Crawl control also modulates throttle and brakes, you can go up and down a steep hill with little traction without touching the pedals.

That's the abs. If you increase the crawl speed or are going up hill (basically so it's applying gas not brakes) you won't hear that noise. On the slowest setting my 4runners crawl control sounds terrible. But it's just abs
