This was tried in the past with the F-111 which failed to be used by the Navy, the idea failed once let's try again.

Are you saying the pilot flew the approach three times?

If the crew did fly the approach three times, they determined that was a viable option. Flying an instrument approach in poor weather is a procedure that is very standardized, with training and is well rehearsed. Risks are mitigated and safety is paramount. There are several elements that are analyzed and evaluated before attempting. Runway condition, weather (wind, ceilings & visibility), surrounding terrain, the sequence of events if you go missed approach... It is far from "Let's give it a shot, I hope this works out."

...^^^... Too difficult to lift all that aircraft mass and ordinance vertically ... then transition it into a speedy horizontal flight and be offensive in a stealth mode ... and while being defensive with enemy aircraft too ... we just don't have that "anti-gravity" technology yet.

DoD's original idea to build a ... "can do everything aircraft for everybody" ... (and save money) just was not feasible ... need to fill some of these operational voids with UAV's. ... Just my thoughts.

    Last time I beat this horse ... :deadhorse: ... promise ... :)

It is. It's...a work in progress. Lots of the pilots like it. The booms are torn because of the camera system. The maintainers, yet to see because we've barely been given a chance to run it through. That won't come until 2018.

Damn video game generation. The more complicated you make shit, the more likely things are to go wrong.

Unfortunately, by sending more pilots to the UAV community, we keep losing pilots in the operational side. I think the last report I read said we were at 70% manning for aircrew. 65% for mechanics. And 110% for nonners.

Nonners in the AF equates to anyone not working on or operating a piece of equipment that flies. Ya know, what the AIR force is meant to do.
