Iggy's $1 Taco

I'm fitting it in the front right now if it's just me an my son. I can turn the airbag off so it's not ideal but safe. Once I get a front facing seat I can put it in the back. I made a different carrier for the dog so I have a seat free for the baby down the road.

 

Ahh gotcha. I REALLY like the access cabs. Had a first gen xtra cab for 8 years, never planned on selling it. Knew I was gonna marry my gf and she wanted kids, so i sold it and bought a ring and a double cab tundra... Long story short missed my Tacoma badly and wanted another one so sold the tundra. Baby planning kept me from an access cab again . Glad to see you're pulling it off!!






I hated the DCSB when I had my first gen. Thought they looked funny with that short little bed

 

Yeah, i needed the full bed for work when I got the truck. No i wish I had a 4 door to have more room for the family, but I'm in too deep now. I toyed with the idea of getting a new DCSB, but I can't part with the truck. I have too much time and engergy vested.

At the end if the day you got to do what works with the kid(s) and the wife! We got a 4Runner as a family car expecting to have it trail ready for everyone in the future. Resisting the minivan though!

 

Wife said Mazda 5 so Wife gets a Mazda 5. Though my 3 year old daughter likes my Tacoma better because daddy drives faster.

It's improved significantly. The bite doesn't feel aggressive but the overall power feels like a well balanced factory setup (with 35's and tons of added weight).

 

Yea I've had the old OTRATTW rockers for a while now, didn't realize they had a new style. @Mademan925 just tagged me because I'm gonna help him rewire his electronics

Alright, I've been working on something and now I can share how it's going!

This thread over at Expedition Portal was the inspiration to get this started. After kicking around a bunch of ideas with @Overlanerd we found a company that could make our ideas come to life. For now I will keep the vendor private until this build is complete and all the kinks have been worked out. They will be producing these to order moving forward.

Ok, so what seems to be lacking in the US market is a camper that has the flexibility of travel of a Flipack and habitat, combined with the 4 season ruggedness of a Fourwheel camper. Australia and Russia both have great options, but non are imported into the US. (What I'm referring to is the Westfalia type of popup). So like most things, if I can't find it, I'll build it. Lacking the necessary experience welding aluminum is was clear that I was not ready to take on a project like this on my own. I finally found a local vendor that was willing to sit down and listen to our crazy ideas. I got an initial quote and was surprise at how affordable this option could be, and so the journey began.

The first step was create something so we could all be on the same page, keep the design like what I envisioned, and keep the costs down and accurate. I build a scale model on Sketchup to get an idea of how everything was going to look like.







After a lot of back and forth, putting down a deposit. I stopped buy the shop to see the progress, man am I excited!!

Two of the differences from the model are, double side doors and double rear doors that eliminate the tail gate. The framing is coming along great!

The protractor is on the front to measure the lid angle. The two doors on the side will flip up, one will have a small slider window and other will be solid.


You can see the framing here for the rear double doors. Part of the reason for double doors on the side was to have the extra frame reinforcement on the center of the camper. The small thing on the side is the test lid. It was made to make sure there is enough room for the gas struts and fabric.


Here is front view of the window area and cab overhang.


This is what eventually will become the sleeping deck. There will be a 1" rail on each side to have a bed extension.


Things left to spec out and design are the gas struts (length, force and attachment points), and the fabric. I'm looking at different materials and ways to make the fabric as minimal as possible. I can't seem to find the rubber canvas that RTT covers are made of or FWC pop up fabric, so I'm also looking at lightweight technical fabrics like coated ripstops.

Thanks guys! I can't wait until it's done. It will hopefully get me and fam out more on trips. Winter and spring are the times I can get time off work, but it's when the weather is the worst.

Hopefully if everything works out, it will one of the most affordable expo options out there!
