Same here. Tacomas are pretty rare in Michigan. Most owners seem to be in the 40-60 yr old age demographic, serious offroaders, or transplants from other regions of the country. Very rare to see 16-30 yrs old daily driving tacomas in my neck of the woods.

Just saw this thread and wanted to chime in. Just bought a 2016 SR5 4x4. When I went shopping for one I started online and then personally visited two dealerships. I knew I wanted a Toyota because:

    1. Every mechanic I've talked to recommend Toy trucks over any other truck. Known to get 300,000 miles or more on the engines.

    2. They seem to really hold their value.

    3. They really do tend to look better than any other truck out there.

    4. Chicks dig them and I dig chicks (this really should be a subsection of point #3 but is worthy of it's own point).

I consider myself a cheap dude always on the lookout for a deal. Every dealership I saw (6 or so) don't keep the SR base models on stock. They force you to special order them. This cuts the legs out from under you if you go this route. I'm sure "special order" means "special processes/manager/finance fee". So the possibility of getting a $24,000 SR for $19,000 or $20,000 was out of the question.

The next tactic was to buy the "ugly truck on the lot". Problem was there were no "ugly Toys" on the lot cause they all are kickass and the color schemes are great...so no uglieness to be found.

The only deal was the only remaining 2016 on the lot. In fact it was the only 2016 in the whole dang area. So when the sales guy approached me and started small talking, he wanted to know what I wanted to spend. I only told him what I didn't want to spend...in this case I wasn't going to spend $30,000 on a truck!

Long story short, when it came to haggling they wouldn't throw out a number, so my number was $20,000. I knew better that this was low but I figured if I wound up with a $31,000 truck for $25,000 that would not be a bad day of work. Their rock bottom price was around $27,000 and I made them throw in tag/title/tax and made sure it came with floormats because you can't assume a car comes with them. I used trade in for a down payment (2001 Ranger on it's last breath). I am convinced that when you put cash in a down payment, the price of financing the car gets gobbled up and seems to disappear and not affect the bottom line.

One thing about buying a Taco is trying to figure out all of the 26,000 variations that suit your needs. This truck will be a daily driver and I didn't set out to get 4x4 capability but at the end of the day I got a loaded (i.e. more shit than I need) for not much more from the base model. Probably buying an SR base model at full special order price would have been a mistake.

So this is why I bought a Toyota. I plan on keeping it for 15+ years.

My boss just ordered a GMC 1500. The entire thing was built in Mexico. My Tacoma was assembled here and is more "Made in the USA" than a GMC.
I would also bet that my Tacoma will still be around to tow that GMC to the junkyard in a couple hundred thousand miles.

No, the truck has something like 670k on it, with around 240k on the current engine. (It had around 150k when installed) Trans, tcase, and everything else are pretty much original though. Still been a tough truck other than rust. No new head gaskets on the current engine since installed, but it got the stainless core ones from Fel-Pro when pulled from the donor.

I sold my silverado 4x4 LT crew can and bought the tacoma and have no regrets. Feels lighter, more fun to drive. Interior space wise it feels that i sit closer to the wife but thats about it. plenty of room otherwise.

Now, i did buy a brand spankin new Dodge Durango R/T for the wife. 5.7 hemi 360/390 hp/tq. Sport mode, eco mode, cylinder deactivation, blind spot monitoring, power tilt and telescoping wheel, adaptive cruise control, heated and cool seats, heated steering wheel. This suv is a beast. Massive power, its a man guided missile. 3 rows seating, 2nd row buckets and console. will tow 7,400 pounds. fully loaded. Paid about 44k for it. lifetime bumper to bumper and lifetime power train warranty too. long trips at 80-90 mph it gets about 23 mpg. strictly city right now its getting 12 mpg. Kind of a good mix for me. I have the simple tacoma and when im tired of driving that, i drive the r/t and enjoy all the modern comforts and the sound of that hemi is quite addicting. when people do ask why I bought a tacoma instead of a fullsize i respond by saying because my tacoma is a bad ass truck and it holds its value unlike my 4x4 fully loaded 2004 silverado that sold for $6,300! :annoyed:
I get the same comments about the dodge from my coworkers. I said lets go for a ride and they are shocked. Best midsize suv out there IMO. the 8 speed/hemi, warranty, styling, and all the features is what makes it great

    Gorgeous.

I saw this Cherokee the other day. White exterior, blood red interior. SRT or something, Man it sounded mean, looked mean.

thanks man. i have never been a mopar fan. Always owned GM vehicles and about 7 or 8 air cooled volkswagens. Wife wanted an SUV so we went to the ford dealer and checked out the explorer sport ecoboost and test drove....meh. I was disappointed. Went to honda, nothing there. We didnt consider the yukon or tahoe because their 3rd rows are trash. Dodge dealer was a few blocks away so i said lets give it a shot. Wife says...I want something with 3 rows, nav, back up camera, powerful, black leather with red stitching. He said okay give me 15 min and ill bring you something. Sure enough we went to a lot down the street and picked up a 2016 r/t durango which happened to be the one we bought and it had everything my wife wanted. I wanted the hemi and towing package. Owned it for 3 months now and not one complaint. Has about 1500 miles on it

Yeah its the only one I saw, as there aren't many Jeeps around here (aside form some Wranglers driven by blonde teenage girls). We live in a Macan and Tesla X world, so to see that GC SRT was a welcome sight!
