I had an 2004 tundra 4.7. Sold it for $9500 and bought a 3rd generation Tacoma. No regrets. I love my new truck! However, I still think the older tundra's with the 4.7 v8 is one of the best trucks. If they still made them that size I would have bought one.

Had a 2008 Tundra. They are completely different trucks. The Tundra could pull a tree stump out of the ground with all the low end torque. The Tacoma needs to wind up a bit more to get going. To me the Tacoma drives more like car but can still tow/haul when needed. It also gets around 5 mpg better mileage and will fit in a standard size garage.

I do not need bigger truck. Just wife and I and don't tow anything over a 4k bass boat. Don't haul anything more than our mountain bikes.

I still say the older tundra model is the best. You get the small size of a mid size truck with the power of a v8. It's the best of both worlds! The only reason I sold mine was because I needed a double cab for the kids. In a perfect world I would have swapped my old tundra for a double cab 4x4 and kept it forever. Toyota needs to bring back the mid size truck with the small v8.

They could eliminate the Tacoma and the Tundra. Create a truck that is about the size of the Tacoma but with a V8, and bring back the T100 moniker.

I had an access cab 1st gen Tundra with the 4.7 and I agree it was a very nice truck. It was great truck. 2 years and 65k and no issues at all.

If they put the 4.7 V8 in the 3rd gen Tacoma it would be the perfect truck.

I owned a 2001 manual 4x4 extended cab tacoma. After 155K miles, 135K of which were supercharged...I traded the tacoma in on a 2007 2wd tundra crew max. The tacoma took a beating and was bullet proof. Fast, fun, and very capable off road. The tundra has been a great truck as well but now has 97K on the odometer. The tundra is fast, comfortable, and is a better road trip vehicle than the tacoma. The 5.7 is a beast of a motor but the automatic transmission is boring and the gas mileage is not great. I've been lurking this forum recently as I've been considering replacing the tundra with either a 4runner or tacoma. Hard to believe the price increases through the years for Toyota. If my memory is correct, I paid 21K for the tacoma and 33K for the tundra with leather. ~40Kish for the 2017 tacoma/4runner I'm interested in seems steep. I miss the manual transmission on my 2001 tacoma but think that I'd quickly miss the 5.7 if I replace with tacoma/4runner. I've sat in a 2016 4 runner and the seating position feels odd as though you're sitting on the floor of vehicle. I haven't had a chance to sit in the new tacoma. I'm leaning toward the tacoma for functionality and manual transmission. I think I prefer the looks of the 4runner but would miss having a truck bed. If Toyota had done the right thing and put the 4.7 in the tacoma/4runner, the decision to buy a new vehicle would be easy.

I have a 01 as well. Additionally I have a 17 6MT Tacoma and a LX570. Reason my 17 Tacoma will eventually get replaced by a Tundra in the future, is the 5.7L

Tacoma is a great truck when you talk about resale, size, etc. However, having a V8 especially a 5.7L is fantastic. I had a 4.7L in my previous 100 series LC, and the 5.7L is worlds better.

The smoothness, torque, quietness, is what would drive me to a new Tundra again. It is just effortless. Lexus LS of Japanese trucks

I don't own, nor have I ever owned, a Tundra. My boss does though. Two of them. Both have S/C's.

I will say this. The Tundra is WAY roomier inside. Night and day. But it's also a boat. However, it's WAY, WAY more powerful.

    Gas mileage is similar.

All about what you want from the truck. If you don't care about 0-60, passing on highways, V8 rumble, power to pull, roomy interior, get a Tacoma.

Had a 2000 Access Cab, a 2003 Sequoia (same platform), and a 2005 Double Cab before my '16 Tacoma. Loved them all and never had a problem with the 4.7 liter. Since my sons are grown and it's just the wife, 2 dogs and I, I downsized and do not regret it. I pulled my bass boat with the Tacoma for awhile and didn't have a problem hauling, but have since sold it. The only thing I miss is the back seat room from the Tundra Double Cab.

That Tundra 4 door you have was the proper proportion

Todays CREWMAX looks like a sumo wrestler hippo, huge front, huge 4 door, but tiny bed.

The double cab new Tundra looks most proportional.

i went from a 2016 tacoma to a 2016 tundra cm. i hated the motor and lack of room in the tacoma. the tundra i loved but hated the payment. i happened to but at my dealer when they got in a 2006 tundra double cab that only had 14k on it. so i traded my 16 tundra in and saved 20k. i really love the 06 tundra. the new tacoma is just to small and under powered they should have made it closer to the older tundra in size and power.
