Undercoat

My newely aquired 1999 tacoma seems like a good truck but I get a lot of road noise in the cab. This was a Texas truck and has no undercoating. I live in Alabama and in this state no dealer does undercoating anymore because of the cost of equipment required by OSHA and the lack of volume for that business. I also have a car that could use it.
Does anyone know of a product that I can buy and apply myself for sound suppresion? Use to be able to buy undercoating in a can and spray it on but not in Alabama anymore. Thought when I moved here from California that I left some those regulations behind but not so.

Paul, undercoating is a good idea, if you DON’T do it yourself. This topic was covered on this forum somewhere. Now to the “NOT a good idea” part. If the undercoating does not adhere properly at any given spot, the air trapped within will condensate and/or trap water thereby creating the ideal condition for rust to form. Ideally, undercoating has to be inspected annually and recoated where necessary. That is how it’s done in Canada where rust is the worst enemy of the automobile. If I may suggest, I would drive to the nearest state or town that applies the coating and provides a warranty. This way, you can spend more time enjoying grits with lots of black pepper and venison on the side than crawl under your truck looking for bubbles. Try H&H there in Trussville on I-59. All grits aside, they seem to offer a good number of services. Themaster is correct, it has to be done correctly. I, due to budget conditions, will probably team with my local Offroad shop to do it ourselves. My 96 does not have it either. I do not drive it off road, bit would like any protection and noise reduction I can get. Jim Mann

If you are looking for some sound suppression check out dynamat. It is butyl rubber coated with aluminum foil. I bought some at best buy for a car stereo install. You can install it under the floor carpet and inside the door panels.

 

I'll give that a look. Under the mats could stop a lot of noise.

For under the wheel wells has anyone heard of having it sprayed with something like Ryhno bed liner? Seems that that would stick and any thickness would tend to be a sound suppressor. Just grasping for straws.

You might even try spray on undercoating. The kind from a rattle can or spray can. K-mart used to have a rattle can undercoating brand called "motivator" undercoating. We have Meijer's in Mich that sells 3-m brand, it's not bad stuff.
Auto-zone, Pep boys, Murray's, Advance auto might be a good place to shop. Or try Wal-Mart's.

 

Thank for the tip. That is the kind of thing I am looking for. I can't find anyone to do it here but if I could find the cans I would do it myself.

Looks like with So. Cal's bit win over N. D. Michigan may loose out on a shot at the National Championship Game. Guess you will have to hope that UCLA takes care of So Cal next week.
