    what is a good brand for the basic mechanic? some say it doesn't matter as long as you are using impact and not regular sockets. Gearwrench looks like a good deal with lifetime warranty.

    Yep. Or Kobalt, they have a lifetime warranty. If they break, walk them into any Lowe's, receipt or not, and get a new socket.

    Craftsman line will be picked up by Black and Decker I think. Not sure what that means for broken tool exchanges though?

    OP, never forget to check out local pawn shops and even eBay. Some great deals on good stuff can be found on both if your timing is right.

    KMart bought Sears in 2005. So they are dying together.
